  6. version 7.1.2 or later. Recommended on Macintosh computers
  7. with the PowerPC microprocessor, including PowerPC-based
  8. Performas. Also recommended on Macintosh computers with the
  9. 68040 or 68LC040 processor.
  10. Description:
  11. Drive Setup installs software that your computer uses to
  12. work with your hard disk. Drive Setup 1.3.1 updates this
  13. software to prevent a rare incident in which you may lose
  14. files on your hard disk or be unable to start up the
  15. computer using your hard disk. (If your computer is unable
  16. to start up, you see a flashing question mark on your
  17. screen.)

  19. This software consists of a Disk Copy NDIF (New Disk Image
  20. Format) compressed image, which requires Disk Copy 6.1 or
  21. later to use. Download this software to your hard drive and
  22. then double-click it to use it. Disk Copy is available in
  23. the Utilities folder.

  25. Disk Copy 6.1 (or later) or Disk Image Mounter 2.1 (or
  26. later) from Apple are the recommended applications to access
  27. all disk images released by Apple and are the only supported
  28. applications to access NDIF disk images.

  34. This document provides important information about Drive
  35. Setup 1.3.1.
  36.  
  37. Drive Setup installs software that your computer uses to
  38. work with your hard disk. Drive Setup 1.3.1 updates this
  39. software to prevent a rare incident in which you may lose
  40. files on your hard disk or be unable to start up the
  41. computer using your hard disk. (If your computer is unable
  42. to start up, you see a flashing question mark on your
  43. screen.)

  45. IMPORTANT  If you see a flashing question mark on your
  46. screen or you have other problems with your computer, you
  47. should see the troubleshooting information in the user's
  48. manual that came with your computer for more information.

  50. IMPORTANT  If your computer does not start up using your
  51. hard disk, you can use a system software CD to start up your
  52. computer. When you do, you may see a dialogue box asking you
  53. to initialise your hard disk. Do not  initialise the disk.
  54. See "Recovering From Disk Problems" later in this document
  55. for more information.

  57. This update is only required by Apple computers that have an
  58. internal ATA (IDE) hard disk. You should use Drive Setup
  59. 1.3.1 immediately to update your hard disk if you have one
  60. of the following computers with system software version
  61. 7.6.1 or 8.0 installed:

  87. Note:  To determine which type of computer you are using,
  88. see the user's manual or technical information booklet that
  89. came with your computer.

  91. To update your hard disk, see "Using Drive Setup 1.3.1 to
  92. Update a Hard Disk" later in this document. You should also
  93. use the Disk First Aid program to ensure that you do not
  94. lose any information on your hard disk.

  96. IMPORTANT  Any time you install system software version
  97. 7.6.1 or 8.0 on your computer, you should use Drive Setup
  98. 1.3.1 to update your hard disk again.
  99.  
  100. Note:  When you use Drive Setup 1.3.1, it installs the ATA
  101. (IDE) device driver version 3.07 if your computer includes
  102. an ATA (IDE) hard disk. To determine which driver is
  103. installed on your hard disk, select the hard disk icon in
  104. the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu. In the
  105. Get Info window, the version appears in the information next
  106. to the word "Where".

  109. System Requirements
  110.  
  111. Drive Setup 1.3.1 requires system software version 7.1.2 or
  112. later.
  113.  
  114. Apple recommends using Drive Setup 1.3.1 on the following
  115. systems:
  116.  
  117. * Macintosh computers with the PowerPC microprocessor,
  118. including PowerPC-based Performas and PowerBooks
  119.  
  120. * Macintosh computers with the 68040 or 68LC040 processor
  121.  
  122. You should not use Drive Setup 1.3.1 to update a computer
  123. that has the Macintosh Processor Upgrade card installed. If
  124. the card is installed in a Macintosh 580 or 630 series
  125. computer, use the 601 Processor Upgrade control panel to
  126. turn off the card before you use Drive Setup. After you
  127. update your hard disk, you can turn the card back on.

  129. You cannot use Drive Setup 1.3.1 to update a PowerBook 150.

  132. Using Drive Setup 1.3.1 to Update a Hard Disk
  133.  
  134. This section describes how to use Drive Setup 1.3.1 to
  135. update your hard disk. You may have Drive Setup 1.3.1 on a
  136. CD or you may have downloaded the Drive Setup 1.3.1 disk
  137. image from an Apple Web site.
  138.  
  139. To use Drive Setup 1.3.1 to update your hard disk, follow
  140. these steps:
  141.  
  142. 1. Back up your hard disk.
  143.  
  144. IMPORTANT  Apple strongly recommends that you make a copy of
  145. your information on the hard disk before you update the disk
  146. using Drive Setup.
  147.  
  148. 2. Insert your system software CD in the CD-ROM drive and
  149. restart your computer using the CD.
  150.  
  151. To learn how to start up your computer using a system CD,
  152. see the user's manual that came with your computer.
  153.  
  154. 3. Locate Disk First Aid on the CD and open the program.
  155.  
  156. 4. Select your hard disk and click Repair.
  157.  
  158. Disk First Aid checks your hard disk and repairs problems it
  159. finds. For more information about Disk First Aid, see the
  160. user's manual that came with your computer.
  161.  
  162. 5. When you've finished, quit Disk First Aid and restart
  163. your computer.
  164.  
  165. 6. When your computer restarts, eject the system CD and
  166. insert the Drive Setup 1.3.1 CD, or use Disk Copy to mount
  167. the Drive Setup 1.3.1 disk image.
  168.  
  169. 7. Open Drive Setup 1.3.1.
  170.  
  171. WARNING  When Drive Setup opens, do not  click Initialise.
  172. Doing so erases all the information on your hard disk.
  173.  
  174. 8. Select your hard disk in the List of Drives list.
  175.  
  176. 9. Choose Update Driver from the Functions menu.
  177.  
  178. IMPORTANT  If Update Driver is not available, your hard disk
  179. may be protected by security software. See the manual that
  180. came with the software to learn how to turn off security
  181. while you update the disk.
  182.  
  183. 10. Click OK when a message appears telling you that you
  184. must restart your computer.
  185.  
  186. 11. Quit Drive Setup when you see the message, "Driver
  187. update was successful".
  188.  
  189. 12. In the Finder, choose Restart from the Special menu.
  190.  
  191. If you have problems or Drive Setup fails to update the
  192. disk, see the troubleshooting chapter in the user's manual
  193. that came with your computer.

  195. IMPORTANT  Your computer comes with an older version of
  196. Drive Setup installed on the hard disk. You should drag the
  197. older version of Drive Setup to the Wastebasket and copy
  198. Drive Setup 1.3.1 to your hard disk.

  201. Recovering From Disk Problems
  202.  
  203. If, when you start up your computer using a system software
  204. CD, you see a message asking you to initialise your hard
  205. disk, do not  click Initialise. It may be possible to
  206. recover the hard disk using Disk First Aid or another disk
  207. utility. To learn how to use Disk First Aid, see the
  208. troubleshooting chapter in the user's manual that came with
  209. your computer. If you are using another disk utility, see
  210. the manual that came with the software.

  213. Initialising Your Hard Disk
  214.  
  215. If you need to initialise your hard disk, see the user's
  216. manual that came with your computer or the system software
  217. CD you are using to learn how to do so. When you have
  218. finished initialising and installing system software on your
  219. hard disk, use Drive Setup 1.3.1 to update your hard disk.

  224. Tips and Troubleshooting
  225.  
  226. * Using Drive Setup with Energy Saver
  227.  
  228. Before you use Drive Setup to perform an extended operation,
  229. such as testing the disk, open the Energy Saver control
  230. panel and select Never for the Hard Disk Sleep option to
  231. prevent the hard disk from spinning down before Drive Setup
  232. has finished.
  233.  
  234. * Manually mounting volumes
  235.  
  236. Drive Setup allows you to partition a hard disk into several
  237. volumes when you initialise the disk. You can also select
  238. whether or not to mount a volume automatically when you
  239. start up your computer by using the "Automount on startup"
  240. option. Starting with Drive Setup 1.3,  a more reliable
  241. method of mounting volumes automatically is being used, to
  242. ensure correct operation with virtual memory. You cannot use
  243. a disk utility program (for example, SCSI Probe version 4.3)
  244. to mount volumes manually if the program does not support
  245. the new way volumes are mounted. However, you can use Drive
  246. Setup to mount volumes manually.

  248. * Re-installing Additional Software
  249.  
  250. Some computers come with additional software installed. If
  251. you want to re-install this additional software using the
  252. "restore" CD that came with your computer, quit Drive Setup
  253. before you re-install the software. Icons will not appear on
  254. the desktop if Drive Setup is open when you re-install the
  255. software.
  256.  
  257. * Waiting for initialisation to complete
  258.  
  259. Sometimes Drive Setup indicates that it has finished
  260. initialising a disk when it has not completely finished.
  261. Wait for your new volumes to appear in the Finder before
  262. continuing.

  265. Improvements to Drive Setup (version history)
  266.  
  267. * Version 1.3 -- Updated to work with all Macintosh
  268. computers that are supported by Mac OS 8. Incorporates Mac
  269. OS 8 appearance. Takes full advantage of the increased
  270. throughput of Ultra SCSI-2 Fast/Wide drives.
  271.  
  272. * Version 1.2.5 -- Limited release for Power Macintosh
  273. Workgroup Servers 7350 and 9650. NOT RECOMMENDED for other
  274. computers. Superseded by later versions.

  276. * Version 1.2.4 -- Updated to access drives with SCSI IDs
  277. greater than 7 (SCSI-2 Fast/Wide). Added the ability to
  278. repair a disk that is damaged by updating with Drive Setup

  283. 68k-based Mac OS computers.
