  26. A   MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  28. You need to have at least the following bits to view
  29. this!zine issue 1 on your Macintosh.
  30.  
  31. * MacOS System 7.1 and above.
  32. * a 68040 CPU @25MHz. Yes, the zine will work with
  33. PowerPC Macintoshes as well.
  34. * a double-speed CD-ROM drive. If you've got a CD-ROM
  35. drive built into the casing of the computer it will
  36. run this!zine. If you have an external CD-ROM drive
  37. check the documentation which came with the drive to
  38. make sure.
  39. * a 13"/14"/15" monitor running at 640x480 with 
  40. 256 colours.
  41. * QuickTime 2.1 system software. This is included on 
  42. this CD-ROM.
  43. * at least 5Mb of available memory. Given that the 
  44. system software takes up a bit of memory whenever your
  45. Macintosh is running, this means you need to have all
  46. up at least 8Mb.

  51. B   QUICKTIME INSTALLATION - MACINTOSH

  53. You need to have the latest version of certain 
  54. system software components to run this!zine. These 
  55. include QuickTime 2.1 and Sound Manager 3.1 among 
  56. others.

  58. The Macintosh QuickTime¬ Installer will automatically
  59. install the correct versions of these system bits in
  60. the relevant places.
  61.  
  62. This installer does not copy any of the this!zine files
  63. onto your hard disk. As a result, you will still need 
  64. the this!zine CD every time you want to view the zine.
  65. As a result, you will also not have to put up with
  66. 650Mb of data on your hard disk.
  67.  
  68. Total hard disk space requirement is about 2.8Mb. Which
  69. you must agree, is very small by today's standards.
  70.  
  71. Stick the CD into your CD-ROM drive. (Remember, you 
  72. have to turn the computer on first before you can get 
  73. the CD-ROM drive tray open. While on the subject, you 
  74. also need to turn on your machine to view the zine).

  76. Double-click on the CD icon. Then double-click on the application named Macintosh QuickTime¬ Installer.

  78. The Installer program will start up. Unless you know
  79. what you're doing, simply click Install to perform
  80. an Easy Install which guarantees you have all the 
  81. required bits.

  83. When the installation is complete, the installer will 
  84. ask to restart your Macintosh. Click Restart.

  86. To view the zine, simply double click on the issue 1 
  87. application.

  92. C   GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING

  94. Here are answers to some common problems.

  96. Q: When I started up this!zine, it suggests that
  97. I turn Virtual Memory off. What does this mean? 
  98. And how do I do this?
  99. A: Virtual Memory uses hard disk space as extra RAM.
  100. This works quite well for most things except video.
  101. QuickTIme video tends to jerk and splutter when 
  102. Virtual Memory is turned on. You can, however, 
  103. still run the zine without turning Virtual Memory off.
  104. To turn Virtual Memory off, open the Memory control
  105. panel and click the Off button in the Virtual Memory 
  106. section. Then restart your Macintosh.
  107. If you are using RAM Doubler, this!zine will also 
  108. report that you should turn Virtual Memory off. We
  109. have noted that video is usually okay with
  110. RAM Doubler.

  112. Q: When I started up this!zine, it also suggests 
  113. that I turn File Sharing off. What does this mean? 
  114. And how do I do this?
  115. A: Again, this is another performance issue. If you
  116. turn File Sharing off, the zine will probably run 
  117. better. But its up to you.
  118. To turn it off, open the Sharing Setup control panel
  119. and simply click the Stop buttons in both the File
  120. Sharing and Program Linking sections.

  125. Now for something interesting, go read the Read Me file
  126. for Windows users. It's called WINREAD.TXT. You can 
  127. open it with SimpleText or TeachText.
