  53. To install and run Borland C++ 5.02, you must meet the 
  54. following minimum system requirements:
  55.  
  56. * 16 MB RAM (24 recommended)
  57. * 80486 processor or better
  58. * Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0
  59. * 25 to 230 MB of free hard disk space (250 MB for the 
  60.   Developer's Suite and 260 MB for the Design Tools), 
  61.   subject to the options you choose (installation options follow)
  62.  
  63. B. Minimum Installation
  64. -----------------------
  65. A minimum installation of Borland C++ 5.02 includes 
  66. only the command line tools (no IDE), and provides the 
  67. ability to work within another editor and use the command 
  68. line compiler. This setup requires approximately 25 MB of 
  69. hard disk space with 16-bit DOS support.
  70.  
  71. C. Full Installation
  72. --------------------
  73. A full installation of Borland C++ 5.02 includes all 
  74. the tools available, the Windows-hosted IDE, and allows 
  75. development for 16-bit DOS, 16-bit Windows, and 32-bit Windows. 
  76. This is called the "Typical" install by the installation program, 
  77. and requires 230 MB of hard disk space.
  78.  
  79. Note: The exact amount of disk space required for installation may 
  80.        vary due to disk cluster size on your PC.

  110. E. Installation Procedure
  111. -------------------------
  112. IMPORTANT!
  113. Do not install Borland C++ 5.02 over previously installed Borland C++
  114. directories. The files in this distribution will not work with
  115. previously shipped tools and libraries. This is particularly true
  116. for configuration files from previous shipping releases, like 
  117. TDCONFIG.TDW and BCCONFIG.BCW.
  118.  
  119. We recommend that you do not install Borland C++ to a path that
  120. contains spaces or long filenames because some 16-bit components do
  121. not support long filenames.
  122.  
  123. To avoid potential conflicts when Setup installs system files, we
  124. recommend that you close down all other running applications before
  125. installing Borland C++.
  126.  
  127. To update from Version 4.5 or earlier, you need to delete the old
  128. version of Borland C++ from your system before installing Version 5.02.
  129. You also need to delete all references to outdated Help files from your
  130. WINHELP.INI file in your WINDOWS directory. Also, if you have
  131. WinRun in your startup group, unload it before installing
  132. Borland C++ Version 5.02.
  133.  
  134. To update from Version 5.0, copy the latest uninstall program,
  135. BC5RMV.EXE, from the CD located in the \WINNT or \WIN95 directory to
  136. your current WINDOWS directory.  Then uninstall Borland C++ 5.0 before
  137. installing Borland C++ 5.02.
  138.  
  139. To install Borland C++ 5.02 from the CD, run \SETUP\BC5\SETUP.EXE.
  140.  
  141. -----------------------------
  142. SECTION 1. Installation Notes
  143. -----------------------------
  144.  
  145. A. Hard Drive Installation
  146. --------------------------
  147. Installing from a CD-ROM may cause synchronization 
  148. difficulties between various pieces of hardware or certain 
  149. hardware drivers. If you suspect that your CD-ROM drive or your
  150. CD-ROM driver might be at fault, you can attempt a hard drive
  151. installation.
  152.  
  153. To begin, copy the entire setup directory into a 
  154. temporary directory on your C:\ drive. The setup directory 
  155. contains all the files needed for the installation. 
  156. Once these have been successfully copied, remove the CD-ROM 
  157. driver from your system configuration by clean-booting, and 
  158. attempt to install the product.
  159.  
  160. When running the install, remember to change the SOURCE 
  161. directory so that it points to the temporary directory.
  162.  
  163. B. Microsoft PLUS! (tm) Issues
  164. -------------------------
  165. Under Windows 95 with the PLUS! Pack (tm) installed, 
  166. some floating-point errors may occur. This has been 
  167. traced to a problem in SAGE.DLL, a part of System Agent. 
  168. If this problem occurs, turn OFF System Agent and 
  169. download Plusupd1.exe from:
  170.  
  171. * Microsoft Network (under mssupport),
  172. * CompuServe (GO MSL), or
  173. * Microsoft's anonymous FTP server 
  174.   (ftp.microsoft.com, Softlib/Mslfiles directory).
  175.  
  176. Run Plusupd1.exe and follow the instructions on the screen.
  177.  
  178. C. CD Installation
  179. -----------------
  180. If you choose the CD installation option or the Custom CD 
  181. Installation option, you will not be able to install any 
  182. of the additional products available (such as CodeGuard, 
  183. PVCS, InstallShield, or the Java addon). This is because a 
  184. CD installation leaves the majority of the product in 
  185. write-protected files on the CD-ROM, rather than on the 
  186. hard drive. These write-protected files need to be modified 
  187. to install any of the additional software.
  188.  
  189. D. Files Changed During Installation
  190. ------------------------------------
  191. The following files are changed during installation:
  192.  
  193. 1. WIN.INI  (under Windows 95)  REMIND.EXE is added to the 
  194.    LOAD line of the WIN.INI file:
  195.  
  196.    load=C:\BC5\PIPELINE\REMIND.EXE  
  197.    (where C:\BC5 is where you installed BC5)
  198.   
  199.    OR
  200.    
  201.    Registry key (under Windows NT):
  202.    \\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT
  203.     \CurrentVersion\Windows 
  204.  
  205. 2. SYSTEM.INI  A change is made to the [386Enh] section:
  206.    [386Enh]

  208.    (where C:\BC5 is where you installed BC5)
  209.  
  210. 3. WINHELP.INI  Lists all of the Help files that were installed.
  211.  
  212. 4. OWL.INI is installed.
  213.  
  214. 5. The following files are created if they are not on the system or 
  215.    modify them if they already exist:
  216.  
  217.    TD.INI
  218.    WORKSHOP.INI
  219.    BCW5.INI
  220.    TDW.INI
  221.  
  222. E. Files Added at First Startup of the Borland C++ IDE
  223. ------------------------------------------------------
  224. Borland C++ creates SPX, SPP, and various configuration 
  225. files in the SCRIPT and BIN directories upon first startup:
  226.  
  227. default.spp
  228. bcwdef.*
  229. *.SPX, *.CFG, *.BCW, *.DSW, *.MBT, *.MRT
  230.  
  231. SPX files are compiled versions of cScript files.  
  232. SPP files are uncompiled cScript source files.
  233. The other run-time files store project and desktop settings 
  234. and other configuration information.  Deleting these files 
  235. does no harm to your system and may help with 
  236. troubleshooting IDE configuration problems.
  237.  
  238.  
  239. F. Removing Registration Reminder
  240. ---------------------------------
  241. If you run the online registration module during Setup and then 
  242. cancel without completing registration, the module adds an EXE to 
  243. your system startup files.  After 14 days, the EXE reminds you to 
  244. register.
  245.  
  246. Windows 95 users can remove the reminder by editing WIN.INI to delete 
  247. REMIND.EXE from the load= line.
  248.  
  249. Windows NT users should edit both WIN.INI and the system registry. 
  250. Launch REGEDT32.EXE.  Choose the HKEY_CURRENT_USER window.  Browse to 
  251. this key: Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows.  Edit
  252. the value named "load." 
  253.  
  254.  
  255. G. Files Available on the CD
  256. ----------------------------
  257. Many files are available on your BC5 CD which are not installed 
  258. on your machine's hard drive to save space. Here is a list of 
  259. the kinds of files that you can find:
  260.  
  261. Example EXE files,

  263.  
  264. CodeGuard versions
  265. of libraries                 In \bc5\lib\cg
  266.  
  267. Debug versions

  274.

  276.  
  277. H. Installation of Help Files
  278. -----------------------------
  279. If you do install Borland C++ 5.02 over an existing 
  280. 5.0 installation, you must delete all of the hidden 
  281. .GID files in the BC5\HELP directory before using 
  282. the online Help system again. Otherwise, you will see 
  283. a gray dialog with an OK and Cancel button and no error 
  284. message when you try to use Help.
  285.  
  286. If you uninstall Borland C++ 5.0, then install 5.02 to 
  287. a different directory, you must manually delete all 
  288. entries in the WINHELP.INI file in the WINDOWS 
  289. directory that refer to the old BC5\HELP directory. 
  290. Otherwise, the effect is the same as above.
  291.  
  292. ---------------------------------------------
  293. SECTION 2. Changing Your System Configuration
  294. ---------------------------------------------
  295. Although Windows 95 and Windows NT are much more stable 
  296. than Windows 3.1, it is still recommended that you change
  297. the configuration of your system if you encounter problems
  298. when installing new software.  Each operating system has 
  299. its own method, as follows.
  300.  
  301. A. "Clean Boot" under Windows 95
  302. --------------------------------
  303. Under Windows 95, the method of obtaining a "clean boot"
  304. is through the use of Safe Mode, a boot option provided by 
  305. Microsoft to aid Windows 95 users.
  306.  
  307. 1. Shut down the machine and reboot it.
  308. 2. Before the Windows 95 splash screen appears, press and hold 
  309.    down F8.
  310. 3. Select Safe Mode from the menu and press Enter.
  311.    You are now running under Windows 95 Safe Mode. 
  312.    Windows 95 will inform you that you are running in a 
  313.    special diagnostic mode with a window.  Click 'OK'
  314.    and you will be able to continue your work.
  315.  
  316. Note:  Windows 95 will not recognize most CD-ROM drives
  317.        in Safe Mode.  If this is the case for your machine, 
  318.        you'll need to copy the files from the SETUP 
  319.        directory and the Setup.exe on the CD onto your hard
  320.        drive and install from there.
  321.  
  322.  
  323. B. "Clean Boot" under Windows NT
  324. --------------------------------
  325. To perform a "clean boot" on an NT machine:
  326. 1. Shut down the machine and reboot it.
  327. 2. When the OS choice menu appears, select number 2, 
  328.    Windows NT Workstation <version #> [VGA mode].
  329.    Windows NT will then boot itself in a clean mode.
  330.  
  331.  
  332. ------------------------------------------------------
  333. SECTION 3. Troubleshooting Installation Error Messages
  334. ------------------------------------------------------
  335.  
  336. A. Startup Error Messages
  337. -------------------------
  338. 1. "Unable to open install configuration file."
  339.  
  340.    Problem: SETUP.CFG is not present in the same
  341.    directory as SETUP.EXE. 
  342.  
  343.    Solution: Move SETUP.CFG to the directory that SETUP.EXE
  344.    is in.
  345.  
  346. 2. "Corrupt install configuration file. Click OK to 
  347.    exit."
  348.  
  349.    Problem: SETUP.CFG does not have the correct format.
  350.  
  351.    Solution: The configuration file for the setup 
  352.    is corrupt. Contact the disk replacement phone 
  353.    number listed at the end of this document to obtain 
  354.    a new disk.
  355.  
  356. 3. "Unable to load string resource (#)."
  357.  
  358.    Problem: A string resource needed by the installation 
  359.    program cannot be found.
  360.  
  361.    Solution: If this error occurs, contact the installation
  362.    support line number listed at the end of this document.
  363.  
  364. 4. "Cannot execute SETUP.EXE (or one of its components). 
  365.    Check to ensure that all required components 
  366.    (INSTXTRA.PAK) are available."
  367.  
  368.    Problem: The installation program cannot execute all or
  369.    part of the SETUP. 
  370.  
  371.    Solution: Make sure INSTXTRA.PAK is located in the same 
  372.    subdirectory as SETUP.EXE.
  373.  
  374. 5. "Cannot execute SETUP.EXE (or one of its components). 
  375.    Check to ensure that all required components (SETUP.CFG) 
  376.    are available."
  377.  
  378.    Problem: The installation program cannot execute all 
  379.    or part of the SETUP.
  380.  
  381.    Solution: Make sure SETUP.CFG is located in the same 
  382.    subdirectory as SETUP.EXE and is getting copied to the 
  383.    TEMP directory correctly.
  384.  
  385. 6. "Internal Error: -69. Unable to start installation."
  386.  
  387.    Problem: Unable to start main installation component.
  388.    This occurs when Windows fails to launch instrun.exe. 
  389.    This could be because:
  390.    * The system is out of memory or resources.
  391.    * The specified file (instrun.exe, in this case)
  392.      was not found.
  393.    * The specified path (usually %TEMP%) was not
  394.      found.
  395.    * The .exe file is invalid (non-Win32 .exe or 
  396.      an error in the .exe image).
  397.  
  398.    Solution: Ensure that all of the above conditions have 
  399.    been met.
  400.  
  401. 7. "Unable to locate USER.DLL." or
  402.    "Unable to locate comctl32.dll"
  403.  
  404.     Problem:  You are trying to install Borland C++ 5.02 
  405.     under a 16-bit version of Windows (Windows 3.x).
  406.  
  407.     Solution: Do NOT install this product under a 16 bit 
  408.     version of Windows.  This product will not install or run
  409.     under 16 bit Windows.  You MUST install this product under
  410.     a 32-bit version of Windows, such as Windows 95 or
  411.     Windows NT 4.0.
  412.  
  413. B. Decompression Error Messages
  414. -------------------------------
  415. 1. "Error during unpacking <name of .pak file>."
  416.  
  417.    Problem (possibilities):
  418.    * The .pak file referenced in the error 
  419.      message contains one or more files that already
  420.      exist on the system. These files are most 
  421.      likely write protected, or the directory they 
  422.      reside in is write protected, or the files
  423.      are in use by a currently running program.
  424.    * The .pak file is corrupted on the CD or 
  425.      diskette.
  426.    * The installation engine is having difficulty 
  427.      with the synchronization of the CD drive and 
  428.      the rest of the machine. 
  429.  
  430.    Solutions:
  431.    * Remove the write protection and then try 
  432.      continuing with the installation.
  433.    * Check the CD or diskette for any bad sectors,
  434.      and call the disk replacement phone number listed 
  435.      at the end of this document if necessary.
  436.    * Attempt a hard drive installation as specified 
  437.      in SECTION 1. Installation Notes.
  438.    * Close applications running in the background.
  439.    * Move the file(s) contained in that .pak file 
  440.      out of the directory they are currently resident
  441.      in and into another, temporary directory.
  442.  
  443. 2. "Archive file <name of file> contains a file that 
  444.    cannot be unpacked."
  445.  
  446.    Problem: The installation engine cannot unpack one of 
  447.    the files contained within the .pak file referenced in 
  448.    the error message.
  449.  
  450.    Solutions: 
  451.    * Check the disk for bad sectors and call the disk 
  452.      replacement phone number listed at the end of this
  453.      document.
  454.    * Call the installation support number listed at the 
  455.      end of this document for information about 
  456.      attempting a manual installation of Borland C++ 5.02.
  457.  
  458. 3. "Archive file <name of file> is corrupted and 
  459.    cannot be unpacked."
  460.  
  461.    Problem: The .pak file is either corrupted on the CD 
  462.    or it is getting corrupted in the copying process.
  463.  
  464.    Solutions: 
  465.    * Check the CD to ensure that the .pak file there 
  466.      is not corrupted. If the CD has a bad sector or 
  467.      track, call the disk replacement phone number 
  468.      provided at the end of this document.
  469.    * If the CD is not damaged, attempt a hard drive 
  470.      installation or attempt to slow the machine 
  471.      down if it is encountering speed synchronization 
  472.      problems with the hardware.
  473.  
  474. 4. "Unable to write to destination file (disk full?) 
  475.    <name of file>."
  476.  
  477.    Problem: The hard disk already contains a 
  478.    write-protected copy of the file.
  479.  
  480.    Solution: Remove the write protection and 
  481.    continue with the install.
  482.  
  483. 5. "386 or better required to expand archive 
  484.    <name of file>."
  485.  
  486.    Problem: Your microprocessor is running too fast.
  487.  
  488.    Solution: Try slowing down your system by taking 
  489.    your machine out of turbo mode and disabling any
  490.    software that speeds your machine up, such as 
  491.    SmartDrive. If necessary, you can also disable 
  492.    BIOS caching and shadow RAM.
  493.  
  494.  
  495. ---------------------------

  497. ---------------------------
  498.  
  499. The registry under Windows 95 and Windows NT is the 
  500. file where information concerning all software added to the
  501. system is logged and kept for reference. You can access the 
  502. registry by using the registry editor (regedit or regedt32 
  503. under Windows NT) to view and change the registry if necessary.
  504. (There is almost never a reason to do this manually.) The 
  505. following is a list of changes made to the registry when 
  506. Borland C++ 5.02 is installed.
