The visiting team won the first four games of the series, but in Game
Five, home team Toronto held off a ninth-inning White Sox rally to take a 3-2
series lead. Then, in Chicago two days later, the Jays put the Sox away with
the series' fifth road victory in its six games.
In Chicago for the series opener, Toronto scored first when Ed Sprague
tripled home a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The White Sox bounced ahead
with three runs in the last of the fourth, but the Blue Jays regained the lead
a half inning later on John Olerud's two-run double, then pulled away to a
17-hit 7-3 win. Toronto also scored first in Game Two, with an unearned run in
the first inning. But in the last of the inning, Blue Jay pitcher Dave Stewart
walked the bases full, then handed Chicago a tying run with a wild pitch. With
two out in the fourth inning, though, back-to-back doubles by Paul Molitor and
Tony Fernandez restored the lead to Toronto, and a walk, an infield hit and an
error increased the Jays' lead to 3-1. This ended the scoring, although the
White Sox loaded the bases in the sixth before Stewart retired the next three
batters to stifle the threat.
The White Sox leaped to life when the series moved to Toronto for Game
Three. After the first two men had been retired in the third inning, Sox
batters combined five singles with a pair of walks for a 5-0 lead, which
Chicago starter Wilson Alvarez held for a 6-1 complete game victory. Lance
Johnson's two-run homer in the second inning of Game Four put Chicago ahead.
The Jays overtook them with three runs an inning later, but in the sixth
inning Frank Thomas homered to even the score at 3-3, and after two batters
had been walked aboard, Johnson's two-out triple put the Sox ahead to stay.
In Game Five, the Blue Jays finally broke the visiting team's lock on
victory, scoring single runs in each of the first four innings, and another in
the seventh, while starter Juan Guzman held Chicago to three hits and a single
run in his seven innings. Robin Ventura's two-run homer off Jays' reliever
Duane Ward in the Chicago ninth narrowed Toronto's lead to 5-3, but Ward then
retired Bo Jackson with his third swinging K of the inning to send the Jays
back to Chicago with a 3-2 series advantage.
Errors ended the White Sox season in Game Six. With the score tied 2-2 in
the fourth inning, a bobble by Chicago third baseman Robin Ventura put Paul
Molitor on base. Molitor subsequently scored the go-ahead run when second
baseman Joey Cora threw a ball low to first into the dugout. Devon White
homered in the ninth inning to stretch Toronto's lead to 4-2, and an error by
Sox reliever Scott Radinsky on what should have been the third out set the
stage for Molitor to triple home a pair of baserunners with the Jays' final
runs. Warren Newson's leadoff homer against Toronto reliever Duane Ward in the
bottom of the ninth narrowed the score to 6-3, but the White Sox came no
closer. The win, starter Dave Stewart's second of the series, was his eighth
triumph without a loss in LCS play.

Atlanta outhit the Phillies by 47 percentage points, outscored them by
ten runs, and yielded 1.6 fewer earned runs per game. But the Phillies won the
pennant. In the opener, Philadelphia starter Curt Schilling fanned ten
batters--including the first five he faced--and left the game after eight
innings with a 3-2 lead. An errant throw by Phillie third baseman Kim Batiste
(who had just entered the game to strengthen the defense) set up an unearned
tying run in the ninth inning. But in the last of the tenth, after John Kruk
had doubled, Batiste redeemed himself with a game-winning hit down the left
field line, and was carried off the field on his teammates' shoulders.
While the Philadelphia offense remained steady over the next two games,
the Braves erupted for 28 runs, quadrupling the Phillies' seven. By the time
Philadelphia scored its first runs in the fourth inning of Game Two, Atlanta
had already sent eight men across the plate. In Game Three the Phillies scored
first, and held a 2-0 lead before the Braves destroyed them with five runs in
the sixth inning and four more in the seventh.
Game Four featured only four fewer hits than Game Three, but ten fewer
runs, as Philadelphia evened the series with its second close win. Phillie
starter Danny Jackson yielded nine hits and a pair of walks in 7 2/3 innings,
but only one second-inning run. In the top of the fourth, Darren Daulton, who
had reached on an infield error, took third on Milt Thompson's double and
scored on Kevin Stocker's two-out single. Pitcher Jackson then singled home
Thompson with what proved the winning run.
In the fifth game, Curt Schilling held Atlanta to four hits through eight
innings, and carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth. But when a walk
and infield error put the first two men on, Mitch Williams relieved Schilling
and gave up a trio of singles which tied the game. In the top of the tenth
inning, though, Lenny Dykstra's solo homer restored the Phillies' lead, and
veteran reliever Larry Andersen blanked the Braves in the bottom of the
tenth--striking out the final two batters--to preserve the win.
After their two narrow wins on the road, the Phillies clinched the
pennant with relative ease when the series returned to Philadelphia for Game
Six. Darren Daulton's two-out double in the third inning put the Phillies up
2-0. Atlanta scored once in the fifth, but Dave Hollins' two-run homer in the
last of the fifth increased the Phillies' lead to three runs, and Mickey
Morandini's two-out two-run triple an inning later pushed the score to 6-1,
driving out Atlanta starter Greg Maddux. Atlanta's Jeff Blauser brought the
score to 6-3 with a home run in the seventh inning, but Phillie relievers
David West and Mitch Williams set the Braves down in order in the final two
innings.

In Game Six Joe Carter joined Bill Mazeroski--the Series hero of 1960--as
only the second man to end a World Series with a home run, and the Blue Jays,
with their third come-from-behind win of the Series, captured their second
straight world title.
The Phillies scored twice in the first inning of the opener, and pulled
ahead in the third and fifth innings after Toronto had twice come back to even
the score. After tying it up for the third time in the last of the fifth,
though, the Blue Jays pushed ahead on John Olerud's solo homer in the sixth
inning, and scored three more times an inning later to put victory out of
Philadelphia's reach. The Phillies also scored first in Game Two, but this
time held on to win. Blue Jay starter Dave Stewart walked the first two
Phillies in the third inning, and both scored as the next two batters singled.
Jim Eisenreich then homered to put Philadelphia up 5-0, and Lenny Dykstra
homered for a sixth Phillie run in the seventh inning, more than enough to
even the Series. Toronto regained the lead when play moved to Philadelphia for
Game Three. In a contest delayed more than an hour by rain, Paul Molitor
tripled home two Blue Jay runs before the first out had been recorded, and the
Jays pushed on from there to an easy 10-3 win.
By just about any measure except pitching effectiveness, Game
Four--played in a steady drizzle that for a time increased to a downpour--was
one of the great ones. At 4 hours 14 minutes, it was the longest in World
Series history, and its 29 total runs scored established a new record for
major league postseason championship play, as did Philadelphia's 14 runs for a
losing team. Toronto scored three times after two men had been retired in the
top of the first inning, but Philadelphia retaliated immediately with four
two-out runs in the bottom of the inning, as Jays' starter Todd Stottlemyre
walked four batters, and Milt Thompson tripled over the center fielder's head.
Lenny Dykstra's two-run homer an inning later pushed the Phillies' lead to
6-3, but Toronto scrabbled back to regain a 7-6 advantage in the third inning
on two walks and four singles. Philadelphia scored a tying run in the fourth
inning, then scored five times an inning later with a barrage of hits
highlighted by Darren Daulton's two-run homer and Dykstra's second two-run
blast of the game. Toronto scored twice in the sixth inning, but single
Phillie runs in the sixth and seventh restored their five-run lead. Then, in
the top of the eighth, the Blue Jays parlayed two walks, two singles and a
two-base error (later changed by the official scorer to a double) into a pair
of runs and a diamond full of baserunners. Phillie reliever Mitch Williams
fanned Ed Sprague for the second out of the inning, but Rickey Henderson lined
a two-run single to center to bring the Jays within one run of a tie, and
Devon White looped a triple to right center for the tying and go-ahead runs.
Roberto Alomar, who had opened the inning with a ground out to third, grounded
again to third to end it. But the Jays needed no more offense, as relievers
Mike Timlin and Duane Ward retired the final six Phillie batters on five
strikeouts and a pair of pop flies.
The Phillies salvaged their final home game, scoring single runs in the
first two innings as Curt Schilling shut out the Blue Jays and forced the
Series back to Toronto for a sixth game. Paul Molitor's RBI triple gave the
Jays a first-inning lead, and his solo homer in the fifth stretched it to 5-1.
Lenny Dykstra's three-run shot in the seventh (his fourth home run of the
Series) brought Philadelphia to within a run of Toronto, however, and Mariano
Duncan (who had singled and stolen second) scored the tying run on Dave
Hollins' single. Three batters later, after a walk and single had loaded the
bases, pinch hitter Pete Incaviglia's sacrifice fly gave the Phillies their
first lead of the game, 6-5. Toronto loaded the bases in the eighth inning but
failed to score. In the bottom of the ninth, though, Phillie reliever Mitch
Williams walked Rickey Henderson and, with one away, gave up a single to
Molitor (which raised his Series batting average to .500). Molitor scored the
Series-winning run when Joe Carter, the next man up, lined Williams' would-be
third strike over the left field fence for an 8-6 victory.
