Atlanta opened the series with a pair of one-sided wins but Pittsburgh
pulled out a close victory in Game Three. After a third loss, the Pirates
pummelled the Braves for two wins even more lopsided than their losses in the
first two games. With the series now even, the stage was set for what turned
out to be one of the most dramatic finishes in postseason history.
In Game One Pirate Jose Lind spoiled John Smoltz's shutout with his first
home run of the season in the eighth inning. But by then the Braves had
scored five times and held victory firmly in hand. Game Two was even easier.
By the time the Pirates came up with four runs in the seventh inning (ending
Steve Avery's LCS-record streak of scoreless innings at 22-1/3), Atlanta had
already compiled two four-run innings of their own (one of them on Ron Gant's
grand slam). The Braves added five more runs in the last of the seventh to
put the game out of reach.
At home for Game Three, the Pirates pulled themselves together behind the
five-hit pitching of rookie knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. Sid Bream's solo
homer in the fourth inning gave Atlanta a 1-0 lead, but Pirate Don Slaught
homered to even the score an inning later and a pair of sixth-inning doubles
put the Pirates ahead. Ron Gant's homer for Atlanta in the top of the seventh
tied the score again, but a single, double, and sacrifice fly in the bottom of
the inning put Pittsburgh on top to stay.
A 6-4 loss in Game Four brought the Pirates to the brink of elimination,
but in Game Five they counterattacked, driving out Atlanta starter Steve Avery
in the first inning with five hits (four of them doubles) and four runs, on
their way to a 7-1 victory. With their feet still at the chasm's edge, the
Pirates unloaded on Atlanta's Tom Glavine for eight runs in the second inning
of Game Six before the first out was recorded, and pushed the assault to a
13-4 conclusion and a tied series.
While the Pirates scored single runs in the first and sixth innings of
the final game, Pirate starter Doug Drabek (who had taken losses in Games One
and Four) held Atlanta scoreless through eight innings. Then, in the last of
the ninth, leadoff Brave Terry Pendleton doubled. He moved to third as David
Justice reached on a grounder bobbled by the usually sure-handed second
baseman Jose Lind. A walk to Sid Bream filled the bases. Stan Belinda
replaced Drabek on the mound and retired Ron Gant on a fly to left, but
Pendleton scored Atlanta's first run after the catch. Damon Berryhill walked
to reload the bases, and pinch hitter Brian Hunter popped out. Had there been
no error, the game would have been over, with Pittsburgh waving the pennant.
Instead, little-used pinch hitter Francisco Cabrera lined the ball safely to
left, scoring Justice with the tying run and Bream with a repeat pennant for
Atlanta.

Oakland had competed in three League Championship Series in the previous
four years and won them all. Toronto in its first fifteen seasons of
existence had competed three times in the LCS and never won. In the first
game of the 1992 matchup, the Athletics scored first on Mark McGwire's two-run
homer and the next batter, Terry Steinbach, pushed the score to 3-0 with
another home run. Toronto's Pat Borders and Dave Winfield retaliated with
solo homers in the fifth and sixth innings to narrow the gap, and the Blue
Jays tied the score in the eighth when Winfield, who had doubled with two
outs, came home on John Olerud's single. But in the top of the ninth, Harold
Baines led off with the game's fifth home run to put Oakland back into the
lead, and A's reliever Dennis Eckersley preserved it for his tenth LCS save.
After this encouraging beginning, though, the A's went into a three-game
decline. In Game Two, fireballer David Cone held Oakland scoreless through
eight innings while the Jays built a 3-0 lead on Kelly Gruber's two-run homer
in the fifth inning and a third score two innings later. Oakland finally
touched Cone for a run in the ninth, but reliever Tom Henke smothered the
threat. The A's recovered from an early deficit in Game Three to tie the
score in the fourth inning, but fell behind on Candy Maldonado's leadoff homer
in the sixth and never regained the lead. In Game Four the A's rocked Toronto
starter Jack Morris for five runs in the fifth, and added another in the sixth
to take a 6-1 lead. But in the eighth, reliever Eckersley, who came on with
one run in and two on, yielded singles on his first two pitches to let in two
more runs, and in the ninth gave up a leadoff single and a game-tying home run
to Roberto Alomar. Toronto finally took the lead in the eleventh as Derek
Bell fouled off several pitches before drawing a walk, took third on
Maldonado's single, and scored on Pat Borders' fly to left. Reliever Tom
Henke held the lead.
Down three games to one, Oakland came out slugging in Game Five. Ruben
Sierra homered for a pair of runs in the first inning and the A's added a
third run two innings later. Dave Winfield homered in the Toronto fourth, but
the A's took advantage of two Toronto errors to score three more runs an
inning later, putting the game out of the Blue Jays' reach. But they couldn't
sustain their comeback. Joe Carter's two-run homer in the first inning of
Game Six, and Candy Maldonado's three-run blast two innings later, highlighted
a 9-2 Toronto romp that ended the team's string of failed opportunities and
carried the American League pennant to Canada for the first time.

Atlanta outscored Toronto in the Series 20 runs to 16, but the Blue Jays
eked out four one-run victories to bring Canada its first world baseball
championship. In the fourth inning of Game One, Atlanta's Tom Glavine gave up
a leadoff homer to Joe Carter for the game's first run, but held the Jays to
just one single the rest of the way. For five innings, meanwhile, Toronto
starter Jack Morris shut out the Braves. But in the top of the sixth he gave
up a three-run homer to catcher Damon Berryhill. This was all the Braves got,
but it was more than enough for the win. The next night, though, down 4-5 in
the ninth inning, Toronto pinch hitter Derek Bell drew a walk from Braves
closer Jeff Reardon, and pinch hitter Ed Sprague lined Reardon's first pitch
over the left field wall for the runs the Jays needed to even the Series.
Toronto moved ahead with another close victory in Game Three, the first
World Series game ever played outside the United States. Atlanta threatened
in the fourth inning when, with two on and none out, David Justice drove the
ball to deep center. But in the defensive play of the Series, center fielder
Devon White leaped high to snare the ball. Baserunner Terry Pendleton was
ruled out for passing Deion Sanders on the basepath, and third baseman Kelly
Gruber tagged Sanders, who was diving back into second base, to complete what
seemed to be a triple play. The umpire didn't see the tag, however, and
called Sanders safe. Still, no Brave scored, and Blue Jay Joe Carter homered
for the game's first run in the last of the fourth. Atlanta tied the game in
the sixth and took the lead in the top of the eighth. Gruber homered to
re-tie it in the bottom of the inning, and after the Jays had filled the bases
in the last of the ninth, Candy Maldonado tagged Reardon for a hit over the
drawn-in outfield to bring home the winning run.
The Jays pushed their Series advantage to 3-1 in Game Four. Catcher Pat
Borders opened the Toronto third with a home run, and Gruber scored from
second on Devon White's seventh-inning single to push the Blue Jay lead to
2-0. The Braves got to Toronto starter Jimmy Key for a run in the eighth, but
relievers Duane Ward and Tom Henke combined to stop them from scoring again.
In the fifth game the Blue Jays, who wanted to clinch the title at home,
twice came from one run down to even the score. But in the fifth inning,
after the Braves had once again built a one-run lead, Lonnie Smith extended it
with a grand slam home run that sent the Series back to Atlanta.
Toronto scored a run in the first inning of Game Six. Atlanta tied the
game in the third, but Candy Maldonado's leadoff homer in the fourth restored
the advantage to Toronto. In the bottom of the ninth, the Braves scrabbled
back to tie it up again. The score remained knotted at 2-2 until the top of
the eleventh, when Toronto's Dave Winfield delivered runners from second and
first with a two-out double into the left field corner. As it turned out, the
Jays needed both runs, for Atlanta scored in the bottom of the eleventh on a
single, error, and ground out. But with two out and the potential tying run
on third, Otis Nixon, attempting a bunt single, just failed to reach safely,
and the Series was over.
