The Giants scored four times in the fourth inning of Game Five, winning
the game and taking a 3-2 series advantage. But Cardinal pitchers shut them
out the rest of the series (an NLCS record 22 innings) to capture the flag.
St. Louis won the opener 5-3, with pitcher Greg Mathews' two-run single
in the sixth providing his margin of victory. The Giants came back in Game
Two, supporting Dave Dravecky's two-hit shutout with home runs by Will Clark
and Jeffrey Leonard. But the Cards retook the series lead in Game Three,
overcoming a 0-4 deficit with two runs on Jim Lindeman's homer in the sixth
and four more in the seventh (capped by Lindeman's sacrifice fly) for an
eventual 6-5 win.
The Giants snapped back with a pair of wins, scoring four runs on three
homers in Game Four (including Leonard's fourth in successive games--an LCS
record), and six runs in Game Five. But Dravecky and the Giants lost a
heartbreaker in Game Six when right fielder Candy Maldonado lost Tony Pena's
fly in the lights for a triple. Pena scored on a sacrifice fly for the game's
only run, as John Tudor and two late-inning relievers blanked the Giants.
Danny Cox pitched an easier shutout in the finale as his Cardinals hammered
seven Giant pitchers for twelve hits and six runs.

The Tigers, with the best over-all won-lost record in the majors, were
favored to defeat the ninth-ranked Twins, although Minnesota held the home
field advantage and the major leagues' best record at home. Tiger pitcher
Doyle Alexander--he had been 9-0 since joining Detroit in mid-August--took a
5-4 lead into the last of the eighth in Game One. But a single and double
drove him out, and before the inning was over three more Twins had scored to
sew up their first win. Detroit scored twice in the second inning the next
day, but the Twins responded later in the inning with three runs, two on Tim
Laudner's double off Tiger ace Jack Morris, and increased their lead in the
fourth and fifth to seal Morris' first loss in Minnesota after eleven wins.
The Tigers won a game after the series moved to Detroit, when Pat
Sheridan's two-run homer in the eighth inning of Game Three restored a lead
they had squandered in the middle innings. But that was it for Detroit, as
the Twins surprised everyone by subduing the Tigers in their den. In Game
Four they took the lead for good on Greg Gagne's fourth-inning home run. And
in Game Five, after initiating the scoring with four runs in the second,
Minnesota pushed on to a 9-5 win and their first pennant in twenty-two years.

Although the Twins compiled a dismal record on the road during the season
(29-52), their play at home (56-25) topped the majors. In postseason play
they won all six games played in their Metrodome, including the four that won
them the world championship. They overwhelmed St. Louis in the Series opener,
the first World Series game ever played indoors. The Cardinals scored first,
in the second inning, but Twin ace Frank Viola (with relief from Keith
Atherton in the ninth) stopped them after that as his teammates unloaded for
seven runs in the fourth inning (capped by Dan Gladden's grand slam) on their
way to a 10-1 win. The Cardinals scored four runs in Game Two, but again the
Twins enjoyed a big fourth inning--bunching six of their ten hits together for
six runs--and scored two other runs on homers by Gary Gaetti and Tim Laudner.
When the Series moved to St. Louis, the Cardinals grabbed the home
advantage to post their three wins. In Game Three, Cardinal pitchers John
Tudor and Todd Worrell combined for a five-hitter as the Cards came from
behind with a three-run seventh to win 3-1. The next day St. Louis broke a
1-1 tie with their own fourth-inning explosion, for six runs. The big blow
was a three-run homer by utility infielder Tom Lawless--only the second home
run of his big league career. Final score: 7-2. After five scoreless
innings in Game Five, St. Louis moved out to a 4-0 lead in the sixth and
seventh innings. Gaetti's eighth-inning triple put two Minnesota runs across,
but the Cards held on for a 4-2 win.
Back in Minneapolis, St. Louis built up a 5-2 lead in Game Six before the
Twins retaliated with four runs in the fifth inning (with Don Baylor's
three-run homer providing the tying runs) and four more an inning later on
Kent Hrbek's grand slam. A final Twins run in the eighth ended the scoring at
11-5.
The Cardinals scored first in Game Seven, with a pair of runs in the
second inning, but the Twins edged their way to a tie with single runs in the
second and fifth, and an inning later took the lead on three walks and an
infield single. As Twin starter Frank Viola held St. Louis scoreless on two
hits after the second inning, Minnesota made the score 4-2 with a final run in
the eighth, and ace reliever Jeff Reardon retired the Cards in order in the
ninth to bring Minnesota its first world championship.
