The Dodgers' league-leading pitchers held St. Louis to three runs over
the first two games, even though the Cardinals recorded eight hits per game.
But the Cards' league-leading hitters put their blows to better advantage in
the next four games of the expanded LCS, scoring twenty-six times for four
wins and the pennant.
Fernando Valenzuela captured Game One for the Dodgers, thanks in part to
some ragged fielding by the usually sharp Cardinal infield. And as Orel
Hershiser was holding St. Louis to two runs in Game Two, an errant Cardinal
pickoff throw and heavy Dodger hitting gave him an increasingly comfortable
lead.
When the series shifted to St. Louis for Game Three, the Cardinals
revived, scoring twice in each of the first two innings for a quick lead,
which they held for their first win. In Game Four they unloaded for nine runs
in the second inning, and in Game Five--with the game and series tied in the
bottom of the ninth--Ozzie Smith hit his first lefthanded home run ever to
give St. Louis the series lead.
Back in Los Angeles, the Dodgers scored first in Game Six, and held a 4-1
lead after six innings. But three Cardinals scored on four hits in the
seventh, and though Dodger Mike Marshall's eighth-inning home run restored the
lead to Los Angeles, Cardinal Jack Clark settled things with a three-run homer
in the ninth.

Were it not for the expansion of the LCS to a best-of-seven series, the
Blue Jays would have won the pennant. But after winning three of the first
four games, the Jays lost their steam and K.C. swept to their second pennant.
The pitching of Toronto ace Dave Stieb proved a key to the club's
fortunes. Three times he started for the Jays. In the opener he threw eight
shutout innings as the Jays won easily. In Game Four he continued to dominate
batters, though three walks in the sixth helped the Royals score a go-ahead
run before Toronto pulled it out (for reliever Tom Henke) with a three-run
ninth. Had the series ended there, Stieb would have been a hero. But it
didn't, and he was called upon again for Game Seven--perhaps with inadequate
rest. This time he faltered. After giving up single runs in the second and
fourth innings, he loaded the bases in the sixth with two walks and a hit
batsman. Jim Sundberg unloaded them with a wind-blown triple, later scoring
himself, and the Royals were on the road to victory.
George Brett keyed Kansas City's triumph. His four hits in Game Three
(including two home runs) gave the club its first victory, and his RBI ground
out in Game Five and go-ahead homer in Game Six proved game-winners in
contests the Royals had to win.

The underdog Royals surprised St. Louis with superior hitting and
pitching, and even outstole the speedy Cards six bases to two. Still, had an
umpire not muffed a call at first base in Game Six, St. Louis might have
emerged from the fray wearing the world crown.
The Cardinals broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning of the opener with
back-to-back doubles off Royal starter Danny Jackson, and held on behind the
strong pitching of John Tudor and reliever Todd Worrell for a 3-1 win. In
Game Two, except for the fourth inning, when he yielded a single and two
doubles (for two runs) before retiring his first batter, Cardinal starter
Danny Cox held the Royals in check. Royal starter Charlie Leibrandt hurled
even more effectively, holding St. Louis to two hits--until the ninth inning,
when four Cardinal hits (three of them doubles) produced four runs and a
second Card victory.
Kansas City finally demonstrated its punch in Game Three. Frank White
hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and the Royals scored four more times to win
behind the six-hit hurling of sophomore sensation Bret Saberhagen. The next
day, though, Royal bats died again against John Tudor, who shut them out on
five hits. Three Royal pitchers yielded only six hits to Cardinal batters,
but two were home runs to Tito Landrum and Willie McGee, and one was a triple
to Terry Pendleton, who scored on a sacrifice squeeze.
Down three games to one, the Royals hammered eleven hits in Game Five for
six runs to win behind Danny Jackson's five-hitter. Seven Royal hits in the
first eight innings of Game Six, though, scored no runs against Cardinal
starter Danny Cox and reliever Ken Dayley. But in the last of the ninth, with
the Cards ahead 1-0 and Todd Worrell now pitching, Royal pinch hitter Jorge
Orta was ruled safe at first on what the cameras showed clearly as an out.
This miscall, followed by a pop foul that first baseman Jack Clark should have
caught but didn't, opened the door to Cardinal disintegration. A single and
passed ball put Royals at second and third, and after an intentional walk to
set up the double play, pinch hitter Dane Iorg singled home the tying and
winning Royal runs.
The Cardinals threw seven pitchers at Kansas City in the finale in a vain
attempt to halt the Royals' fourteen-hit, eleven-run attack, while Bret
Saberhagen stopped the Cards cold on five hits to bring the Royals their first
world title.
