The official records show Atlanta ahead and threatening only once in a
three-game series swept by the Cardinals. But in the original Game One, Phil
Niekro held a slim 1-0 Atlanta lead in the fifth inning when rain wiped out
the game just before it could become official.
In the first official game, the Braves scored nothing at all as Bob
Forsch held them to three hits. Atlanta's Pascual Perez gave up only one run
through the first five innings, but the Cardinals exploded for five runs in
the sixth to put the game away. Following another rainout, Niekro tried again
in Game Two. He gave up a run in the first, but Atlanta came back with three
before he yielded a second run in the sixth. Gene Garber, who relieved
Niekro, gave up the tying run in the eighth and lost the game in the bottom of
the ninth on Ken Oberkfell's RBI liner over the center fielder's head.
Joaquin Andujar shut out the Braves through six innings of Game Three
before giving up two runs in the seventh. But by then St. Louis had scored
five times. Bruce Sutter retired the last seven Braves in relief of Andujar,
and the Cardinals had their pennant.

For the first time in LCS play, a club won the first two games but lost
the series. The Angels overcame a 1-3 deficit to take Game One, with four
runs in the third and three more later, while starter Tommy John settled down
to stop the Brewers through the final six innings. In Game Two Bruce Kison
prevailed, as the Angels built a 4-0 lead over Milwaukee and Pete Vuckovich
before Kison gave up what proved to be a harmless two-run homer to Paul
Molitor in the fifth.
With three chances to clinch the pennant, California three times fell
short. In the third game, their three eighth-inning runs couldn't catch the
Brewers, who already had five. In Game Four, Don Baylor's eighth-inning grand
slam completed Angel scoring at five runs, but Milwaukee had already scored
seven, and they added two more. In the finale, Kison held a 3-2 lead when he
was relieved after five innings. But Cecil Cooper singled off Luis Sanchez in
the seventh (with two out and the bases loaded) for two runs and a Brewer
lead. Bob McClure and Pete Ladd held off the Angels through the final two
innings, and the Brewers were on their way to their first World Series.

The Series was anticipated as a matchup of Cardinal speed and Brewer
power. In the event, though, St. Louis outslugged the Brewers and wound up
with their tenth world championship.
The Brewers, in their first World Series, looked unstoppable in the
opening game. Hammering four Cardinal pitchers for seventeen hits (including
a record five for Paul Molitor), they scored ten runs while pitcher Mike
Caldwell was shutting out the Cards on three hits. In the second game
Milwaukee continued the onslaught, building an early 3-0 lead. But St. Louis
finally got on the scoreboard with two runs in the last of the third, and tied
the game at 4-4 in the sixth on Darrell Porter's two-RBI double. And the
Cards won the game on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth as relievers Doug Bair
and Bruce Sutter held the Brewers scoreless over the final four innings.
St. Louis pushed into the Series lead in Game Three, thanks mostly to the
6 1/3 shutout innings of starter Joaquin Andujar and the fielding and batting
of center fielder Willie McGee. McGee drove in four of the six Cardinal runs
with a pair of homers and prevented an extra-base hit and a two-run Brewer
homer with leaping catches in the first and final innings. The Cards pressed
their advantage in Game Four with four early runs. But in the last of the
seventh (with the score now 5-1), an error by Cardinal pitcher Dave La Point
opened the way for Milwaukee to win the game with six two-out runs on a
barrage of hits (and the added assistance of a pair of walks and a wild
pitch).
Brewer pitcher Mike Caldwell wasn't as effective in Game Five as he had
been in the opener, yielding fourteen hits and four runs in 8 1/3 innings of
work. But he was never behind in the game as his teammates, with eleven hits
of their own (four of them by Robin Yount, including a home run) and several
fielding gems put Milwaukee ahead again in the Series with a 6-4 win.
The Cards had their backs to the wall as the Series moved to St. Louis
for the final games. But in Game Six the Cards responded to their
opening-game humiliation with a laugher of their own, 13-1, on John Stuper's
four-hitter. And in the finale they rocked Brewer ace Pete Vuckovich and
three relievers for fifteen hits and a 6-3 victory that gave starter Joaquin
Andujar his second Series win and reliever Bruce Sutter his second save.
