The Expos, who triumphed over the NL East in the second half of the
season, won the first two play-off games at home by identical 3-1 scores over
the first-half champion Phillies. The Phillies rapped Expo ace Steve Rogers
for ten hits in Game One, but Keith Moreland's solo home run in the second was
the only hit to produce a run. The homer tied the score briefly, but the
Expos regained the lead in the last of the second inning on Chris Speier's
double and increased it to 3-1, two innings later. The Expos scored their
three runs early in Game Two on Speier's second-inning single and Gary
Carter's two-run homer an inning later. Expo starter Bill Gullickson blanked
the Phillies on three hits through 7 2/3 innings, but three two-out hits in
the eighth scored a Phillie run and brought on reliever Jeff Reardon, who
ended the threat for his second save in as many days.
When the Series moved to Philadelphia, the Phillies recovered to even
things with a pair of wins. After an easy 13-hit 6-2 victory in Game Three,
they took a 4-0 lead into the fourth inning of Game Four. Montreal fought
back to tie the game, fell behind again, then re-tied the score at 5-5 in the
top of the seventh. The final innings featured a duel between relievers Tug
McGraw and Jeff Reardon. McGraw stopped the Expos on one hit through three
innings, and took the win when Reardon, after retiring eight Phillies in a
row, gave up a leadoff homer to pinch hitter George Vukovich in the bottom of
the tenth.
Steve Rogers won the division title for Montreal in the finale, hurling a
six-hit shutout against the Phillies and driving in the first two of the
Expos' three runs with a bases-loaded single through the box in the fifth
inning.

Cincinnati, with the league's best overall season record, failed to win
either half season in the NL West, and watched from the sidelines as
first-half winner Los Angeles, down 0-2, recovered to win the final three
games--and the division title--from second-half victor Houston. In the
opener, Astro Alan Ashby's two-run homer in the last of the ninth broke a 1-1
tie and gave Nolan Ryan a two-hit victory. The next day, Astro Denny
Walling's two-out bases-loaded single in the last of the eleventh scored Phil
Garner with the game's only run.
When the clubs shifted to Los Angeles for the remainder of the series,
the Dodgers came alive. In Game Three, a first-inning double by Dusty Baker
and home run by Steve Garvey drove in three Dodger runs. Pitcher Burt Hooton
and two relievers held Houston to three hits in what became a 6-1 Dodger
victory. The next day, Dodger Fernando Valenzuela and Astro Vern Ruhle hurled
matching four-hitters. But Pedro Guerrero's home run in the fifth inning and
a pair of Dodger singles sandwiched around a a sacrifice and intentional walk
in the seventh gave Los Angeles two runs, while Valenzuela held Houston to a
single run in the ninth. In the finale, Jerry Reuss blanked the Astros on
five hits while his Dodgers blended three of their seven hits with a walk and
Astro error for three runs in the sixth. Two more hits produced a final run
an inning later.

Fine pitching characterized the series, with the losing team held to one
run in four of the five games. In the exception Expo Ray Burris hurled a
shutout.
Montreal put men on base in each inning of the opener. But the pitching
of Burt Hooton and Bob Welch--plus some fine Dodger fielding--kept the Expos
from scoring until the ninth, when their one run was too little to overcome
the Dodger lead. Burris' shutout evened the series in Game Two as the Expos
scored three times against rookie sensation Fernando Valenzuela. The Expos
took the series lead in Game Three, overcoming a 0-1 deficit with a two-out
four-run burst in the sixth (capped by Jerry White's three-run homer).
In the end, though, the Dodgers prevailed. Through seven innings of Game
Four, Hooton and the Expos' Bill Gullickson dueled at 1-1. But in the top of
the eighth, Steve Garvey homered with a man aboard, and four more Dodger runs
in the ninth put the game away. The finale--Burris vs. Valenzuela
again--featured another 1-1 duel, this one reaching into the top of the ninth
when, with two out, Dodger Rick Monday homered off reliever Steve Rogers. In
the bottom of the ninth, Valenzuela walked two batters after retiring two, but
Welch came on to save the game and the pennant.

The home field didn't seem to offer any advantage. First-half winner New
York captured both games played in Milwaukee, but when the Series moved to
Yankee Stadium for the final three games, the second-half champion Brewers
evened the series. Milwaukee took a 2-0 lead early in the opener, but New
York erupted for four runs in the fourth on Oscar Gamble's two-run homer and
Rick Cerone's double, and held on to win 5-3. In Game Two, rookie starter
Dave Righetti fanned ten Brewers in his six innings and Goose Gossage's
brilliant relief earned him his second save in two days as the Yankees took a
3-0 win on homers by Lou Piniella and Reggie Jackson.
Milwaukee, struggling against elimination, took the lead in the seventh
inning of Game Three on Ted Simmons' two-run homer. New York tied the score
at 3-3 in their half of the inning, but Paul Molitor broke the tie in the
eighth with a solo homer. Simmons doubled home an insurance run later in the
inning for a 5-3 Brewer win. The Brewers tagged Yankee pitching for only four
hits in Game Four, but three of them came in the fourth inning and combined
with a sacrifice fly to produce the Brewers' two runs. New York scored once
in the sixth, but baserunning errors an inning later ended their only other
scoring threat.
In the finale Milwaukee scored two early runs, but the Yankees (as they
had done in the opener) took the lead with a four-run fourth--this time on
home runs by Reggie Jackson and Oscar Gamble, and Rick Cerone's single.
Cerone later hit an insurance homer, as the home team finally won a game--and
captured the division crown.

First-half winner Oakland, with the league's best win-loss record over
the full season, swept the division title from second-half champ Kansas City
(who, with a full-season record of 50-53, had become the only club in
major-league history to qualify for postseason play with a losing record).
Twice in the opener the Royals loaded the bases against Mike Norris with fewer
than two outs, but both times failed to score. Meanwhile, after a Royal error
had prolonged the A's fourth inning, Wayne Gross homered for three unearned
Oakland runs. Dwayne Murphy's eighth-inning solo shot gave the A's a fourth
run. The game ended with Norris possessor of a four-hit shutout.
Game Two was closer. Oakland's Tony Armas doubled in a run in the top of
the first, and doubled home another in the eighth (his fourth hit of the game)
to break a 1-1 tie and provide the margin needed for pitcher Steve McCatty's
six-hit win. The A's Rick Langford yielded ten hits in Game Three (including
Kansas City's only extra-base hit of the series, a double), but only one Royal
scored, meanwhile the A's were sending four runs across the plate--three of
them by Rickey Henderson, who reached base four times on pairs of hits and
walks.

The A's scored only four runs to their opponents' twenty as the Yankees
swept the series. And only two of the six Yankee pitchers permitted an
Oakland runner to score, while not one of Oakland's eight pitchers held New
York scoreless. Even so, two of the three games were closely contested.
Oakland's Mike Norris gave up a bases-loaded double to Graig Nettles in
the first inning of Game One before settling down to pitch shutout ball. But
the three runs Nettles drove in were more than enough, as Tommy John and two
relievers held the A's to a single run.
Game Two was the series' only blowout, and even it remained close for
three innings. But, led by a pair of three-run homers from Nettles and Lou
Piniella, the Yankees parlayed nineteen hits into thirteen runs as Yankee
reliever George Frazier held the A's scoreless over the final five frames.
Game Three remained tight until the ninth. Through eight innings the
only run came on Yankee Willie Randolph's homer off Oakland starter Matt
Keough. But in the top of the ninth, Graig Nettles tagged reliever Tom
Underwood for his second bases-clearing double of the series. The three runs
weren't really needed, as Dave Righetti, Ron Davis, and Goose Gossage combined
to shut out the A's for the full nine.

What the Yankees had done to the Dodgers three years earlier, the Dodgers
now did to the Yankees in this, their eleventh meeting in the Series: they
took the crown with four straight wins after losing the first two games. In
the opener Bob Watson's first-inning three-run homer gave New York an
insurmountable lead. Yankee starter Ron Guidry pitched seven strong innings,
yielding just one run on a Steve Yeager homer, but two eighth-inning Dodger
runs charged to reliever Ron Davis made things exciting until Yankee third
baseman Graig Nettles dampened the rally with a splendid diving catch of Steve
Garvey's line drive. In Game Two, Tommy John (now a Yankee) shut out his old
teammates on three hits for seven innings. Reliever Goose Gossage completed
the shutout, earning his second save in two days in the 3-0 Yankee victory.
But as the Series moved to Los Angeles, the Dodgers took the upper hand.
Rookie ace Fernando Valenzuela experienced rocky going in the early innings of
Game Three, yielding six hits (including home runs to Bob Watson and Rick
Cerone) and four runs in the second and third innings. But Ron Cey's
first-inning home run had given Los Angeles three early runs, and Dodger
hitters added two more in the fifth as Valenzuela settled down to blank New
York on three hits over the final six innings. The next day the Dodgers
evened the Series with another close win. New York scored four times before
the Dodgers got their first runs, but L.A. tied the game at 6-6 in the sixth
and took an 8-6 lead an inning later. Reggie Jackson homered in the eighth to
bring New York within one run of a tie, but they came no closer.
In Game Five, for the third day in a row, the Dodgers ovecame a Yankee
lead to claim a one-run victory. Dodger pitcher Jerry Reuss gave the Yankees
a run on two hits in the second inning, but shut them out on just three
additional hits the rest of the way. Yankee starter Ron Guidry, meanwhile,
stopped the Dodgers on two hits through the first six innings, but then gave
up back-to-back homers to Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager in the seventh--runs
enough for a 2-1 Dodger win. The final game was close for four innings, but
in the fifth and sixth the Dodgers broke it open with seven runs and coasted
in on Steve Howe's 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief to a 9-2 win and, including
1900, their sixth world championship.
