In the tightest LCS yet, the Phillies took the opener 3-1 on the series'
only home run--Greg Luzinski's two-run blast in the sixth inning. It was the
only game not to go into extra innings.
The Astros evened the series in Game Two--demolishing a 3-3 tie with four
runs in the tenth--and took the series lead in a Game Three pitchers' duel
that saw Astro Joe Niekro hurl ten scoreless innings. Reliever Dave Smith
continued the shutout and took the win as Joe Morgan's triple and Denny
Walling's sacrifice fly off ace Phillie reliever Tug McGraw scored the game's
only run in the bottom of the eleventh.
The Phillies rebounded, though, with their own set of extra-inning
victories. In Game Four, a single and two doubles pushed across two go-ahead
runs in the top of the tenth, and McGraw preserved the edge for his second
series save. And in the finale--which saw the lead change hands three
times--after Del Unser scored on Gary Maddox's tenth-inning double, Dick
Ruthven held off Houston to bring the Phillies their first pennant in thirty
years.

Kansas City and New York met for the fourth time in the LCS, and this
time the Royals swept to their first pennant. In the first game the Yankees
scored first, with second-inning home runs by Rick Cerone and Lou Piniella,
but the Royals' Frank White doubled in a pair later in the inning to tie it,
and Willie Aikens' hit in the third gave K.C. the lead. They held it to the
end as Larry Gura shut out New York the rest of the way.
The Royals scored three runs in the third inning of Game Two, on Willie
Wilson's two-run triple and an RBI double by U. L. Washington. Yankee starter
Rudy May stopped K.C. after that, but the Royals already had enough for the
win as Dennis Leonard in eight innings held New York to two runs, and Dan
Quisenberry kept the lid on in the ninth.
Game Three was decided by home runs. White scored first for the Royals
with a solo shot in the fifth. New York took the lead briefly with a two-run
sixth, but lost it--and the pennant--in the top of the seventh when Goose
Gossage, relieving starter Tommy John with two out and a man on, gave up an
infield single to Washington and a home run to George Brett.

Both clubs had won divisional titles three years in a
row--1976-1978--only to lose the League Championship Series. But both
overcame the jinx in 1980 to face off in the World Series--the Phillies for
the first time in thirty years, the Royals for the first time ever. Kansas
City began with a rush in the opener, scoring two runs on Amos Otis' homer in
the second inning and two more on Willie Aikens' blast an inning later. But
the Phillies came back to take the lead in their half of the third with a
five-run rally capped by Bake McBride's three-run homer. Single Phillie runs
in each of the next two innings kept them out of reach of Aikens' second
two-run shot in the eighth for a narrow 7-6 win. The Phillies extended their
Series advantage with a 6-4 win in the second game, rebounding from a two-run
deficit with four runs in the eighth inning.
The two clubs traded single runs throughout Game Three. Royal George
Brett's first-inning homer began the scoring. The Phillies got the run back
in the second inning, the Royals took the lead back in the fourth, Phillie
Mike Schmidt homered to tie it again in the fifth, Amos Otis countered with a
homer in the seventh, and Pete Rose singled in another tying Phillie run in
the eighth. Phillie reliever Tug McGraw (who had a save in the opening game)
came on to pitch the last of the tenth inning, but couldn't hold the tie,
though two men were out before Willie Aikens singled in the Royals' winning
run. The Royals evened the Series with their second victory the next day,
scoring four times in the first inning and once in the second (with Willie
Aikens for the second time in the Series hitting two home runs in a game),
then holding on for a 5-3 win.
But the Phillies recovered to win the next two, and their first world
crown. Mike Schmidt's fourth-inning two-run homer began the Phillies' scoring
in Game Five. The Royals replied with one run in the fifth, and Amos Otis'
home run an inning later tied the game. A second K.C. run in the inning put
the Royals ahead until the top of the ninth, when pinch hitter Del Unser
doubled home Schmidt to tie the game, and Manny Trillo drove home Unser with
the go-ahead run. Tug McGraw, who had held K.C. scoreless through two innings
of relief, loaded the bases in the last of the ninth with three walks, but at
last fanned Jose Cardenal for the final out. In Game Six, with the Phillies
ahead 4-0 in the eighth inning, McGraw relieved starter Steve Carlton with two
men on, and loaded the bases with a walk. One Royal scored on a sacrifice fly
before McGraw got his third out. In the ninth, another McGraw walk and two
singles again loaded the bases with only one away, but Frank White popped out
foul, the ball bouncing off Bob Boone's catcher's mitt into Pete Rose's hand,
and Willie Wilson struck out for the twelfth time to end the Series.
