Atlanta's Hank Aaron homered in each game and drove in a series-high
seven runs. But the "Miracle Mets" as a team outhomered the Braves six to
five, outhit them by seventy-two percentage points, and scored nearly twice as
many runs.
Twice in the first game the Braves came from behind to lead by a run, but
in the top of the eighth, five New York hits and poor Atlanta fielding buried
starter Phil Niekro under five runs. In Game Two, home runs by Tommie Agee
and Ken Boswell helped New York take an early 8-0 lead that even Aaron's
three-run homer in the fifth couldn't damage.
In the third game the lead changed hands three times on home runs. Aaron
began the barrage with a two-run shot in the first inning. Agee's homer in
the third followed by Boswell's for two runs in the fourth put the Mets
ahead--until Orlando Cepeda's two-run homer in the fifth gave Atlanta another
lead. But in the bottom of the fifth, Met rookie Wayne Garrett's two-run
blast reversed the lead one last time and, after four final shutout innings by
twenty-two-year-old reliever Nolan Ryan, the Mets had swept to their first
pennant.

Minnesota led the league in batting, Baltimore in pitching. In the LCS,
pitching prevailed as the Twins were held to a series batting average 113
points below their season mark.
Still, Minnesota nearly won the first game with three runs on only four
hits. But the Orioles tied the score on Boog Powell's homer in the bottom of
the ninth and won the game three innings later on Paul Blair's suicide squeeze
bunt with two away. In Game Two, Minnesota's Dave Boswell scattered seven
Baltimore hits over 10 2/3 scoreless innings before giving way to Ron
Perranoski in the eleventh. But Oriole pitcher Dave McNally was more than a
match for Boswell. He gave up only three Twin hits--none in the final 7 2/3
innings of the 11 he pitched--and took the win when Baltimore pinch hitter
Curt Motton lined a single off Perranoski to score Powell from second with the
game's only run.
In the third game, the Twins fell apart as the Orioles battered seven
Minnesota pitchers for eighteen hits. Baltimore's Jim Palmer gave up more
than a hit an inning himself, but coasted to the pennant 11-2.

The heavy-hitting, slick-fielding Orioles, who also boasted the majors'
top pitching staff, entered the Series clear favorites against the upstart
Mets. But the "Miracle Mets," after losing the opener, polished off Baltimore
with four straight wins.
The clubs' big winners, Met Tom Seaver (25-7) and Mike Cuellar (23-11)
faced each other in the opener. Baltimore's leadoff batter, Don Buford,
greeted Seaver with a home run, and a three-run Oriole rally with two out in
the fourth made the score 4-0 before the Mets scored their first Series run in
the seventh. Cuellar held New York to that one run for the victory.
No one scored for three innings of Game Two off Oriole Dave McNally or
even hit Met Jerry Koosman safely. But Met Donn Clendenon led off the fourth
with a home run as Koosman continued to no-hit Baltimore for three more
innings. In the seventh, though, Baltimore's Paul Blair spoiled Koosman's
no-hitter with a leadoff single, and after stealing second, scored the tying
run on Brooks Robinson's single. But those were the only hits the O's would
get, and in the top of the ninth three successive two-out Met singles produced
what proved to be the winning run.
Met pitchers Gary Gentry and Nolan Ryan (with the assist of two
spectacular catches by center fielder Tommie Agee that saved a total of five
runs) combined for a shutout in Game Three. Agee's leadoff homer against Jim
Palmer in the first was all the scoring the Mets would need, but they added
four more runs before the game ended. Game Four was the Series' tightest.
Seaver went the distance for the win, holding a 1-0 lead until a sacrifice fly
scored the tying Baltimore run in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the
tenth, the Mets finally won it as a bunt thrown to first hit the runner and
bounded away, allowing pinch runner Rod Gaspar to score all the way from
second.
Dave McNally and Jerry Koosman tangled a second time in Game Five, and
again Koosman and the Mets emerged victorious. McNally's two-run homer in the
third gave him a lead which Frank Robinson expanded with a solo shot. But in
an eerie sixth inning reprise of Game Four of the 1957 World Series featuring
Nippy Jones, the Mets' Cleon Jones was struck by a pitch on the foot and
awarded first base after inspection by the home plate umpire revealed
tell-tale shoe polish on the ball. Each Jones produced a key run, Cleon
coming home on Donn Clendenon's home run which followed immediately. Al Weis
homered in the seventh for a 3-3 tie. With McNally now gone, two doubles off
Eddie Watt in the eighth brought in the go-ahead Met run, and a pair of errors
let in a run for insurance. Koosman held Baltimore scoreless in the ninth and
the Met miracle was complete.
