The Orioles, with their first pennant since moving from St. Louis in
1954, won the franchise's first World Series ever, crushing Series repeater
Los Angeles in four games. Back-to-back home runs by Frank and Brooks
Robinson in the top of the first inning of the opener gave Baltimore a quick
three-run lead, and the O's added a fourth run an inning later before the
Dodgers attempted to come back with single runs in the second and third
innings. But by then Oriole reliever Moe Drabowsky had come on to pitch, and
he stopped the Dodgers on one hit the rest of the way, striking out eleven
(including six in a row in the fourth and fifth innings). The Dodgers would
not score again in the Series.
Sophomore Jim Palmer (a week shy of his twenty-first birthday) hurled a
four-hit shutout at Los Angeles in Game Two, defeating the great--but
critically sore-armed--Sandy Koufax, who, though only thirty years old
himself, was pitching the final game of his career. Three errors by center
fielder Willie Davis in the fifth (including a pair of flies lost in the sun)
led to three unearned runs--the first scoring against Koufax. Frank
Robinson's leadoff triple in the sixth and Boog Powell's single gave the
Orioles an earned run before a double play ended the inning. Koufax was
replaced after the inning by a succession of Dodger relievers as Baltimore
went on to win 6-0.
Wally Bunker did the honors for the Orioles in Game Three, emerging the
victor of a pitching duel with Dodger Claude Osteen on the strength of a
fifth-inning home run by Paul Blair, a tremendous 430-foot shot to left.
Osteen yielded only two other Orioles hits--both singles--in his seven
innings, and Dodger reliever Phil Regan retired the side in the eighth. But
one run was all Bunker needed for his shutout win.
Dave McNally, who had given up the Dodgers' only Series runs in Game One,
mended his ways with a four-hit shutout in Game Four. He needed the shutout
for the Oriole sweep, for Dodger Don Drysdale was also in top form. Drysdale,
too, gave up only four hits. But one of them was Frank Robinson's second home
run of the Series, a fourth-inning solo shot to left for the game's only
scoring.
