  98.      The Twins (bringing the World Series to Minnesota for the first time
  99. ever) featured heavy hitting, while Dodger hopes rested on great pitching and
  100. speed on the bases.  For a while it looked as if batting power would triumph
  101. as the Twins took the first two games at home.  They drove out Dodger starter
  102. Don Drysdale with seven runs in the first three innings of the
  103. opener--including home runs by Don Mincher and Zoilo Versalles--on the way to
  104. a convincing 8-2 win, and followed up with a 5-1 triumph the next day over
  105. Dodger ace Sandy Koufax (who had declined to pitch Game One on Yom Kippur, the
  106. holiest day of the Jewish year) and star reliever Ron Perranoski, who was
  107. tagged for three of the Twins' runs.
  108.      But when the Series moved to Los Angeles, Dodger pitching began to assert
  109. itself.  Claude Osteen held Minnesota to five hits and no runs, while Los
  110. Angeles bunched seven of their ten hits in the middle three innings for four
  111. runs.  Drysdale evened the Series in Game Four, avenging his first-game
  112. pounding with a second Dodger five-hitter.  Twins Harmon Killebrew and Tony
  113. Oliva tagged him for a pair of solo homers, but that was Minnesota's only
  114. scoring--more than balanced by seven Dodger runs, including homers by Wes
  115. Parker and Lou Johnson.  In Game Five the next day, Koufax avenged his earlier
  116. loss, carrying Los Angeles to its first Series lead with a shutout in which he
  117. allowed only four singles and a walk, while fanning ten Twins.  Speedster
  118. Willie Davis stole three bases and Maury Wills stole another as the Dodgers
  119. parlayed fourteen hits into a 7-0 victory.
  120.      Back in Minnesota for Game Six, the Twins rallied, using the long ball to
  121. even the Series again with a 5-1 win.  Bob Allison opened the scoring with a
  122. two-run shot off Dodger starter Claude Osteen in the fourth, and Minnesota
  123. pitcher Mudcat Grant insured his own win with a three-run blast two innings
  124. later.
  125.      In the finale, though, the visiting team won for the only time in the
  126. Series.  Koufax again struck out ten men, stopping the Twins on three hits for
  127. his second shutout.  Lou Johnson's second Series homer (a fourth-inning solo
  128. shot to left off Twin starter Jim Kaat that was barely fair) was all the
  129. Dodgers needed for their fifth world championship, but Ron Fairly followed
  130. Johnson with a double and Wes Parker singled home an insurance run that drove
  131. Kaat out and concluded the Series scoring.
