  76.      Slugger Mickey Mantle sat out most of the Series with a thigh infection,
  77. but rookie manager Ralph Houk enjoyed an otherwise splendid finish to a
  78. splendid season as his Yankees mauled the Reds, 27 runs to 13.  Yankee ace
  79. Whitey Ford, coming off one of his finest seasons (25-4), carried his mound
  80. mastery into the Series opener, holding Cincinnati to two singles and a walk
  81. as he hurled his third straight World Series shutout.  New York recorded only
  82. six hits, but two of them were home runs by Elston Howard and Bill Skowron.
  83.      Gordy Coleman's two-run homer the next day in the top of the fourth
  84. inning broke Cincinnati's scoring drought and gave the Reds a 2-0 lead.  Yogi
  85. Berra tied the score half an inning later with a two-run blast for New York,
  86. but that was all they would get.  Red starter Joey Jay blanked the Yankees the
  87. rest of the way as his teammates put across four more runs to even the Series.
  88. Bob Purkey pitched for the Reds in Game Three and blanked New York on one hit
  89. through the first six innings, taking a 1-0 lead into the top of the seventh.
  90. A pair of Yankee singles sandwiched around a passed ball evened the score, but
  91. the Reds regained the lead with a run in the last of the seventh.  But Yankee
  92. pinch hitter Johnny Blanchard homered to retie the game in the eighth
  93. and--while Yankee relief ace Luis Arroyo stopped the Reds through the final
  94. two innings--Roger Maris hit his sixty-second home run of the year to win the
  95. game and regain the Series lead for New York.
  96.      Cincinnati never again threatened.  In Game Four, Whitey Ford held the
  97. Reds to four harmless singles until he was removed in the sixth because of an
  98. ankle injury. (In the third inning he passed Babe Ruth's World Series record
  99. of 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings.)  Reliever Jim Coates continued
  100. Ford's shutout as the Yankees scored seven runs for the decisive win.  The
  101. fifth and final game also was no contest.  Cincinnati did score five
  102. runs--three on Frank Robinson's third-inning home run and two on Wally Post's
  103. shot in the fifth.  But the Yankees ran through eight Red pitchers, scoring 13
  104. times.  Seven of their 15 hits went for extra bases, including Johnny
  105. Blanchard's second home run of the Series, and a triple and homer by utility
  106. outfielder Hector Lopez.
