Through six games and 8 1/2 innings of the seventh, the Yankees had
outscored the Pirates by 29 runs. But as Pirate second baseman Bill Mazeroski
stepped to the plate to open the last of the ninth, the Series was even at
three games apiece, and Game Seven was tied 9-9. The stage was set for
Mazeroski to fulfill that ultimate baseball fantasy, and he did, on pitcher
Ralph Terry's second pitch.
Yankee Roger Maris opened the Series scoring with a solo homer in the
first inning of Game One, and Elston Howard added two more Yankee runs with a
homer in the ninth. But between the home runs New York scored only one run to
the Pirates' six (including a two-run homer by Mazeroski in the fourth).
The Yankees avenged their first-game loss with a blowout in Game
Two--their first of three. Pittsburgh hit safely 13 times, but scored only
three runs. New York, though, turned 19 hits (and a Pirate error) into 16
runs--five of them driven in by Mickey Mantle's two home runs. Continuing
their assault in New York the next day, the Bronx Bombers scored six runs in
the first inning and four in the fourth as Whitey Ford blanked the Pirates on
four hits. Mantle homered again, and second baseman Bobby Richardson drove in
a Series single-game record six runs with a grand slam and a single.
Pirate ace Vernon Law--the winner of Game One--started Game Four and,
with relief help once again from Roy Face, held the Yankees to two runs to
even the Series. Law's bat proved crucial, too, as he doubled in Pittsburgh's
first run and scored the third in a three-run fifth that provided all the
Pirate scoring. In Game Five, the Pirates' Mazeroski doubled in what proved
the two decisive runs in a three-run second as Harvey Haddix and Roy Face (who
recorded his third save of the Series) duplicated the previous day's
achievement of limiting New York to two runs.
But once again the Yankees came back. Bobby Richardson drove in three of
New York's 12 runs with two triples to establish a new Series record of 12
RBIs as the Yankees, behind Whitey Ford's second shutout, sent the Series into
a seventh game.
Home runs dominated the finale. Rocky Nelson's two-run shot in the first
opened the scoring, and Yankee homers by Bill Skowron in the fifth and Yogi
Berra in the sixth contributed four of the five runs that put New York ahead
5-4. Pirate Hal Smith's three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth restored
the lead to Pittsburgh, 9-7, and after the Yankees had tied the game in the
top of the ninth (on three singles and a ground out), Mazeroski's immortal
shot over the wall in left gave Pittsburgh its first world championship in
thirty-five years.
