  87.      It took a nosedive from first to third by San Francisco and a Dodger
  88. playoff victory over Milwaukee (who had finished the season tied with the
  89. Dodgers), to bring Los Angeles the city's first major league pennant.  But
  90. once they had made it to the Series, the Dodgers dispatched the White Sox in
  91. six games.
  92.      The opener, though, belonged to Chicago.  In their first World Series in
  93. forty years, the White Sox overwhelmed Los Angeles with 11 runs in the first
  94. four innings as pitchers Early Wynn and Gerry Staley combined to blank the
  95. Dodgers.  Chicago's big gun was veteran slugger Ted Kluszewski (acquired from
  96. Pittsburgh in late August), whose single and two homers drove in five runs.
  97. Chicago scored twice in the first inning the next day, but Dodger starter
  98. Johnny Podres settled down to blank the Sox over the next five innings as home
  99. runs by Charlie Neal in the fifth and pinch hitter Chuck Essegian and Neal
  100. (again) in the seventh put the Dodgers ahead by two.  Rookie reliever Larry
  101. Sherry gave up a third Chicago run in the eighth on Al Smith's double, but a
  102. second runner was nailed at the plate, and Sherry set down the side in the
  103. ninth to save Podres' win.
  104.      When the Series moved to Los Angeles' cavernous Coliseum for the West
  105. Coast's first World Series games ever, fans turned out in record numbers,
  106. setting a new Series mark in each of the next three games.  Dodger starter Don
  107. Drysdale yielded 11 hits and four walks in Game Three, but the only run scored
  108. against him came on a double-play after Larry Sherry had relieved him with two
  109. men on in the eighth.  As Los Angeles had already scored twice, and added a
  110. third run in their half of the eighth, Drysdale emerged with the win and
  111. Sherry with his second save.  In Game Four, the Sox's Sherm Lollar's three-run
  112. homer had tied the score by the time Sherry relieved Dodger starter Roger
  113. Craig in the eighth, so Gil Hodges' solo homer in the last of the eighth gave
  114. Sherry the win this time--and Los Angeles a 3-1 Series advantage.
  115.      Chicago's Bob Shaw dueled Dodger Sandy Koufax through seven innings of
  116. Game Five before 92,706 spectators (still a Series high).  The Sox scored only
  117. once off Koufax, but one run was enough for their second win as a pair of Sox
  118. relievers continued Shaw's shutout through the final two innings.
  119.      Back in Chicago for Game Six, the Dodgers unloaded on Early Wynn and Dick
  120. Donovan for eight runs in the third and fourth innings.  Ted Kluszewski's
  121. three-run homer in the last of the fourth led to Larry Sherry's fourth relief
  122. appearance--and his second Series win, as he held the Sox scoreless the rest
  123. of the game to bring the world championship to the West Coast for the first
  124. time.
