After four games, Milwaukee held a 3-1 Series advantage, but New York
rebounded to take the final three games and avenge their loss to the Braves
the year before. As in the previous series, Warren Spahn faced Whitey Ford in
the opener. The durable Spahn emerged the victor when Bill Bruton singled
home the Braves' winning run off reliever Ryne Duren in the last of the tenth.
In Game Two, home runs by Bruton and pitcher Lew Burdette (for three runs)
helped put the Braves ahead 7-1 in the first inning. Milwaukee scored off
five Yankee hurlers in their eventual 13-5 win.
Don Larsen and Ryne Duren combined for a shutout in Game Three to give
New York its first victory. Hank Bauer drove in all four Yankee runs with a
two-run single in the fifth and his third home run in three games in the
seventh. Warren Spahn held Bauer hitless in Game Four, blanking New York on
two hits to defeat Whitey Ford and bring Milwaukee within a win of the
championship.
Yankee Bob Turley came up with a shutout of his own the next day, though,
fanning ten men along the way. Gil McDougald's solo homer in the third inning
was all the offense Turley needed, but as insurance the Yankees bunched six of
their ten hits into the sixth inning for six more runs.
Spahn and Ford, with only two days' rest, confronted each other a third
time in Game Six. Ford lasted less than two innings, but Spahn (despite Hank
Bauer's fourth Series home run in the first inning) endured into extra
innings, when McDougald put New York ahead with a leadoff homer in the tenth.
Two outs and two hits later, Spahn was removed, and Bill Skowron's single off
reliever Don McMahon drove home another Yankee run. Milwaukee scored once in
the last of the tenth and threatened further damage with men on first and
third. But Bob Turley came on to retire the final batter and send the Series
to a seventh game.
In the sixth inning of the finale, the Braves' Del Crandall homered
against Turley (who had relieved Don Larsen in the third) to tie the game 2-2.
But four Yankee runs off starter Lew Burdette in the top of the eighth
(including Skowron's three-run homer) made the score 6-2, where it remained,
as Turley held on to bring Casey Stengel his seventh (and last) Series
triumph--and the Yankees their eighteenth.
