Overall, the Yankees pitched better, hit oftener, and scored more runs
than the Braves. But the Braves had Lew Burdette, and with him they won the
Series.
The opener pitted the Braves' established great Warren Spahn against New
York's emerging great Whitey Ford. Ford prevailed, with a five-hit 3-1 win as
Spahn was chased in the sixth. Burdette, winner of 17 regular-season games,
started Game Two against veteran Bobby Shantz, the American League ERA leader.
After a scoreless first inning, both pitchers gave up a run in the second and
another in the third. Two go-ahead runs in the top of the fourth ended the
Braves' scoring, but they were enough, as Burdette blanked New York through
the final six innings to even the Series. Before he was finished, Burdette
would stretch his consecutive scoreless innings to 24.
The Yankees exploded in Game Three, in Milwaukee, running through six
Brave pitchers for a 12-3 rout. Braves fans even ended up cheering Yankee
second baseman Tony Kubek--a Milwaukee native--who opened the scoring with a
solo homer in the first, scored again after singling in the fourth (on Mickey
Mantle's home run), and concluded the Yankee scoring in the seventh with his
second homer, with two aboard.
Warren Spahn carried a 4-1 Braves lead into the ninth inning of Game
Four, but after retiring the first two batters in the ninth, he gave up
singles to Yogi Berra and Gil McDougald, and a game-tying home run to Elston
Howard. In the top of the tenth, Hank Bauer tripled in a go-ahead Yankee run,
but Milwaukee's Johnny Logan doubled to tie it up in the last of the tenth,
and Eddie Mathews homered to give Spahn a shaky victory.
Burdette faced Ford in Game Five. In the sixth inning the Braves put
half their hits--three singles--back to back for a run. It was all they
needed as Burdette spaced seven singles for the shutout. Back in New York the
next day, all the scoring came on home runs. Each club hit a pair, but
Berra's in the third was the only one with a man aboard. Brave blasts in the
fifth (Frank Torre) and seventh (Hank Aaron) tied the score, but Bauer
answered Aaron's homer in the last of the seventh with what proved the winning
shot. Bob Turley, who yielded just four hits while fanning eight (the Series
high) claimed the Yankee victory.
In the finale, Burdette, with only two days' rest, scattered four hits
over the first eight innings as the Braves gave him a 5-0 lead. In the bottom
of the ninth, though, three Yankee singles loaded the bases with two out. But
third baseman Eddie Mathews snared Bill Skowron's sharp grounder and stepped
on the bag for a force out that preserved Burdette's second shutout and gave
Milwaukee its first world championship.
