  100.      The Dodgers and Yankees, after a year's absence, faced each other again
  101. in the World Series--their sixth Series confrontation in fifteen years.  And
  102. after Brooklyn had lost the first two games it began to look as though 1955
  103. might also mark the Yankees' sixth Series triumph over the Dodgers.  But this
  104. was Brooklyn's year.
  105.      The opener was a hitters' game, but closely contested.  Both teams scored
  106. twice in the second inning and once in the third, but Yankee first baseman Joe
  107. Collins' leadoff homer in the last of the fourth gave New York its first lead
  108. of the game, and his two-run blast in the sixth made the score 6-3.  Brooklyn
  109. clawed back in the eighth for two runs--including Jackie Robinson's steal of
  110. home--to pull within one run of a tie, but they came no closer.  In Game Two,
  111. Yankee pitcher Tommy Byrne held the Dodgers to five hits and two runs, and won
  112. his own game at the bat with a two-run single that capped the Yankees'
  113. four-run fourth.
  114.      The Series turned around as the Dodgers captured the next three games in
  115. Brooklyn.  Roy Campanella's two-run homer in the first inning of Game Three
  116. gave Brooklyn a quick lead.  New York tied the game with a pair of runs in the
  117. second (one of them a homer by Mickey Mantle, who appeared in only three
  118. Series games because of a leg injury).  But two more Dodger runs in the last
  119. of the second drove out Yankee starter Bob Turley and put them ahead to stay
  120. as Dodger hurler Johnny Podres held the Yankees to three runs.  Home runs by
  121. Campanella, Gil Hodges, and Duke Snider accounted for six of Brooklyn's eight
  122. runs in Game Four as the Dodgers evened the Series at two-all.  Sandy Amoros'
  123. second-inning homer initiated the scoring in Game Five, and Snider's blasts in
  124. the third and fifth (which made him the first player to hit four home runs in
  125. two different Series) gave Brooklyn a 4-1 lead, which even late-inning Yankee
  126. homers by Bob Cerv and Yogi Berra could not overcome.
  127.      New York bounced back in Game Six, scoring all five of their runs in the
  128. first inning (including three on Bill Skowron's homer) to give Whitey Ford a
  129. comfortable lead, which he held with a one-run four-hitter.  But in the
  130. finale, Gil Hodges drove in two Brooklyn runs with a single in the fourth and
  131. a sacrifice fly in the sixth.  They were all Brooklyn got, but they proved
  132. more than enough to carry the Dodgers to their first world title in fifty-five
  133. years, as left fielder Sandy Amoros stifled New York's only real scoring
  134. threat with a spectacular running catch in the sixth that started a double
  135. play and preserved Johnny Podres' second Series win.
