  87.      Although the Yankees easily won the American League pennant, the Dodgers
  88. seemed even more overwhelming, with a team batting average of .285 and a
  89. club-record 105 season wins.  But when the Series was over, the Yankees had
  90. added a record fifth straight world championship to their record fifth
  91. straight pennant.
  92.      Dodger ace Carl Erskine lasted only one inning of the Series opener,
  93. giving up three walks and two triples for four Yankee runs.  By the middle of
  94. the seventh inning, the Dodgers had tied the score at 5-5.  But Yankee Joe
  95. Collins homered to break the tie in the last of the seventh, and reliever
  96. Johnny Sain ensured his own win with a two-run double an inning later.  The
  97. Dodgers outhit New York in Game Two, and held a 2-1 lead entering the bottom
  98. of the seventh.  But Billy Martin (who hit .500 and slugged .958 in the
  99. Series) tied the game with a leadoff homer in the seventh, and Mickey Mantle
  100. won it with a two-run blast in the eighth.
  101.      Down 0-2, Brooklyn evened the Series at home with victories in Games
  102. Three and Four.  Erskine redeemed his poor start in Game One with a
  103. record-setting 14-strikeout performance in Game Three.  But it was a narrow
  104. win, settled only when Roy Campanella homered in the last of the eighth to
  105. break a 2-2 tie.  In Game Four, Duke Snider made Billy Loes' three-run
  106. pitching a winning performance, driving in four of the Dodgers' seven runs
  107. with two doubles and a homer.
  108.      But Brooklyn never even took the lead in the final two games.  Four
  109. Yankee home runs (including a Mantle grand slam) rocked Dodger pitching in
  110. Game Five as the Bombers built a lead which Dodger home runs in the eighth and
  111. ninth were unable to overcome.  In Game Six the Yankees built a 3-0 lead over
  112. Erskine in the first two innings.  Brooklyn fought back with a run in the
  113. sixth, and tied the game on Carl Furillo's two-run homer in the top of the
  114. ninth.  But with men on first and second in the last of the ninth, Yankee
  115. Billy Martin singled in the game-ending, Series-winning run.  It was Martin's
  116. twelfth hit, a new record for a six-game Series.
