  85.      The Giants--who caught Brooklyn with a tremendous late-season drive, then
  86. defeated them for the pennant on Bobby Thomson's ninth-inning home run in Game
  87. Three of the tie-breaker playoff series--carried their momentum through Game
  88. Three of the World Series before bowing to the Yankees.  Dave Koslo (the only
  89. Giant starter not to see action in the playoff) pitched the Series opener and
  90. held the Yankees to one run.  Monte Irvin's steal of home for the Giants'
  91. second run in the top of the first was enough for the win, but Al Dark made
  92. Koslo's lead more secure with a three-run homer in the sixth.
  93.      The Yankees evened the Series in Game Two, scoring two early runs (one of
  94. them Joe Collins' home run) off Larry Jansen, and holding on for the win
  95. behind Ed Lopat's five-hit pitching.  But the Giants regained the lead in Game
  96. Three with five unearned runs (three of them on Whitey Lockman's homer) in a
  97. fifth inning prolonged by two Yankee errors, as pitchers Jim Hearn and Sheldon
  98. Jones combined to hold the Bronx Bombers to five hits and a pair of runs
  99. (though Hearn issued eight walks).
  100.      But that was the end of the Giants' drive.  Although they scored first in
  101. games Four and Five with first-inning runs, they couldn't hold the lead either
  102. time.  In Game Four Allie Reynolds held the Giants to two runs as his Yankees
  103. scored six--including a two-run homer by Joe DiMaggio in the fifth inning that
  104. proved to be the last home run of his career.  DiMag drove in three more
  105. Yankee runs in Game Five, as did Phil Rizzuto, and rookie infielder Gil
  106. McDougald contributed a grand slam as the Bombers earned their nickname in
  107. obliterating Giant pitching with 13 runs.  Ed Lopat, meanwhile, hurled his
  108. second five-hitter of the Series for his second win.
  109.      Yankee Hank Bauer tripled with the bases full in the sixth inning of Game
  110. Six to break a tie and give the Yankees a 4-1 lead.  The Giants loaded the
  111. bases with three straight singles to open the top of the ninth, and scored two
  112. runners on successive flies to left, to come within one run of a tie.  But
  113. pinch hitter Sal Yvars (in his only Series at-bat) lined out to right and the
  114. Yankees had their fourteenth world title.
