  61.      Philadelphia's Whiz Kids, who had capped an exciting pennant race with
  62. the Phillies' first flag in thirty-five years, carried the excitement into the
  63. World Series but couldn't quite catch up with the Yankees.  New York scored
  64. only one run in the opener; Philadelphia didn't score any.  The Phillies did
  65. score a run in the second game, but the Yankees scored two.  In Game Three the
  66. Phillies scored two runs, the Yankees three.
  67.      Jim Konstanty, the National League's ace reliever (and MVP), started his
  68. first major league game in four years to lead off the Series, and held the
  69. Yankees to just four hits in eight innings of work.  But Bobby Brown's double
  70. in the fourth was followed by two long flies which moved Brown around to the
  71. plate--all the scoring New York needed as Vic Raschi held the Phillies to two
  72. singles and a walk.
  73.      Robin Roberts and Allie Reynolds dueled in Game Two.  New York scored
  74. first with a run on a walk and two singles in the second inning, but two
  75. Phillie singles and a fly to left tied the game in the last of the fifth.
  76. There matters stood until the top of the tenth, when Joe DiMaggio led off with
  77. a home run to the upper deck in left.  Reynolds held the Phillies in the
  78. bottom of the tenth for the second Yankee win.
  79.      The Phillies took a lead for the only time in the Series when they broke
  80. a 1-1 tie with a run in the seventh inning of Game Three.  But New York scored
  81. on a Phillie error to tie the game again in the eighth, and in the last of the
  82. ninth--with two outs--Yankees Gene Woodling, Phil Rizzuto, and Jerry Coleman
  83. singled to produce the winning run.
  84.      Rookie sensation Whitey Ford started Game Four and held Philadelphia
  85. scoreless into the ninth inning as his Yankees scored twice in the first and
  86. three more times in the sixth.  He was taken out with two away in the ninth
  87. after two singles, a hit batsman, and a Yankee error had permitted two
  88. Phillies to score.  But reliever Allie Reynolds struck out the final batter to
  89. secure for the Yankees a Series sweep.
