  63.      As they had six years earlier, the Cubs faced the Yankees in the World
  64. Series, and as they had six years earlier, New York swept the Series in four
  65. games. Although Cub batters made nearly as many hits as the Yankees, they did
  66. much less damage, driving in 13 fewer runs.  In Game One, Yankee ace Red
  67. Ruffing scattered nine Cub hits, holding Chicago to a single run.  The Cubs'
  68. Bill Lee was nearly as effective in scattering hits, but a base on balls in
  69. the second (the game's only walk) followed by a pair of singles sandwiched
  70. around an error accounted for two runs--all the Yankees would need for the win
  71. (though they scored once more in the sixth).
  72.      In Game Two the Cubs outhit the Yankees 11 to 7, but scored only half as
  73. many runs as the New Yorkers.  Chicago's Dizzy Dean, pitching on craft and
  74. guile with his fastball gone, managed to keep the game close until the final
  75. innings.  With a 3-2 lead going into the eighth, though, he gave up a two-run
  76. homer to Frank Crosetti, and the same to Joe DiMaggio in the ninth before
  77. being relieved.  Yankee fireman Johnny Murphy, meanwhile, held Chicago
  78. scoreless over the final two innings to preserve Lefty Gomez's win.
  79.      Utility outfielder Joe Marty drove in both Chicago runs in Game Three
  80. with a grounder to third in the fifth and a homer in the eighth. (His .500 BA
  81. was tops for both teams, and he drove in five of the Cubs' nine Series runs.)
  82. But again the Cubs fell short, as Yankee rookie second baseman Joe Gordon
  83. homered to tie the score in the bottom of the fifth with the first of what
  84. would be five Yankee runs by the time Bill Dickey's homer in the eighth ended
  85. the scoring for the day.
  86.      Cub second baseman Billy Herman's wild throw with two out in the second
  87. inning of Game Four led to three unearned runs, and a Yankee lead they would
  88. not relinquish.  Though their lead was cut to one run (4-3) when Chicago
  89. scored twice in the top of the eighth, the Yankees took advantage of two wild
  90. pitches and two walks to turn their four hits into four runs that crushed Cub
  91. hopes and gave the New Yorkers a record third consecutive world championship.
