For the second year in a row, the Yankees overwhelmed the Giants, this
time in just five games. Giant ace Carl Hubbell, who took the opener in 1936,
was unable to repeat this year. For five innings he held the Yankees to one
hit. But in the sixth everything fell apart. Before Hubbell was taken out,
two walks, five singles, and a Giant error had let in five runs. And the two
runners Hubbell left on base scored later on a second Giant error and two
walks by reliever Dick Coffman. The Yankees' Lefty Gomez also yielded six
hits, but wider spacing and better field support held the Giants to one run in
the fifth. Tony Lazzeri's homer in the eighth made the final score 8-1.
The Yankees spread their runs a bit more evenly in Game Two. For the
second time the Giants gained a 1-0 lead. Rookie phenom Cliff Melton held the
Yankees scoreless through four, but four straight hits for two runs at the
start of the fifth drove him out. Reliever Ad Gumbert stopped the Yankees in
the rest of the inning but gave up four more hits--and four more runs--in the
sixth before Coffman stepped in to stop the assault. But Coffman gave up two
final Yankee runs in the seventh, to complete a second straight 8-1 Yankee
win, as Red Ruffing held the Giants scoreless through the final eight innings.
The Yankees had scored five times off Hal Schumacher in Game Three before
the Giants got their one run in the seventh. But Yankee starter Monte Pearson
made the game tighter as he yielded a single and two walks to load the bases
in the ninth before Johnny Murphy came on to record the final out.
Giant bats finally came alive in the second inning of Game Four. Seven
singles, plus a walk and a missed play at the plate gave the club a 6-1 lead,
which starter Hubbell protected for the only Giant win of the Series.
Solo homers by Myril Hoag in the second and Joe DiMaggio in the third
gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead early in Game Five, but Giant Mel Ott tied it up
with a two-run shot off Lefty Gomez in the last of the third. But Gomez shut
the Giants down the rest of the way, and singled in Lazzeri in the fifth with
what proved the game winner (scoring himself on Lou Gehrig's double for the
final run of the Series).
