The Giants managed to win two games, but this first Series between the
cross-river rivals in thirteen years was really no contest. Babe Ruth was
gone, but Lou Gehrig was still there, and Joe DiMaggio had arrived. The
Yankees outhit the Giants by 56 percentage points and outscored them by 20
runs.
Giant ace Carl Hubbell, who had won his final 16 decisions of the regular
season, continued his streak in the Series opener. The Yankees scored first
on George Selkirk's third-inning homer, but Giant shortstop Dick Bartell
homered to even things in the fifth. Hubbell held the Yankees to that one
run, but the Giants roughed up Red Ruffing for five more runs, to give the
Polo Grounders a brief Series advantage.
Game Two was a Yankee blowout, as the Yankees hammered five Giant
pitchers for 18 runs--four of them on Tony Lazzeri's grand slam in the
third--to give Lefty Gomez an easy win. By contrast, Game Three was a
pitchers' duel. Although the Giants touched Bump Hadley and Pat Malone for 11
hits, only Jimmy Ripple's fifth-inning homer produced a run. Giant Freddie
Fitzsimmons was much more stingy with hits, yielding only four. But one was
Gehrig's home run in the second inning, and another was Frank Crosetti's
game-winning RBI single in the eighth.
Gehrig homered again in the third inning of Game Four to give the Yankees
an insurmountable lead--and Hubbell his first loss in months. Down three
games to one, the Giants struggled back in Game Five. They took a
first-inning 3-0 lead, but the Yankees clawed their way back, and by the end
of six the score was 4-4. There it stayed until the tenth, when a double,
sacrifice, and fly to center put the Giants ahead by a run. Hal Schumacher,
who had pitched the whole game, held the Yankees scoreless one more time for
the win.
Fitzsimmons, who had pitched so well in his third-game loss, didn't last
four innings in Game Six. Though the Giants scored first, Yankee Jake Powell
(who led all Series hitters at .455) tied the game with a two-run homer in the
top of the second. Two more runs in the fourth drove out Fitzsimmons, but the
game stayed close until the top of the ninth, when five Yankees singles and
three walks produced seven runs and a Series-ending 13-5 rout.
