  66.      Lou Gehrig, who hit .529 and scored nearly a quarter of New York's runs,
  67. led both clubs in batting, slugging, hits, runs, and RBIs as the Yankees
  68. crushed the Cubs in four games.  But the Series is best remembered for Babe
  69. Ruth's "called" shot in Game Three, when he pointed his bat atp itcher Charlie
  70. Root in the fifth inning and broke the game's 4-4 tie a moment later with a
  71. massive home run into the center field bleachers.  Debate has raged ever since
  72. about whether Ruth intended his gesture as a home run prediction.  Whether
  73. intended or not, it erased from public memory Gehrig's home run that followed
  74. Ruth's (and the homers both men had hit earlier in the game), and made
  75. memorable an otherwise undistinguished Series.
  76.      Chicago scored in the first inning of each game, taking early leads in
  77. three of the four, but held no lead beyond the sixth inning.  In Game One, the
  78. Cubs connected for ten hits to the Yankees' eight, but managed to score only
  79. half as many runs as the New Yorkers, who put what had been a close game out
  80. of reach with five runs in the sixth (on four walks, two singles, and a ground
  81. out) and three more in the seventh (a walk, two singles, a hit batsman, a
  82. sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch).
  83.      Chicago's Lon Warneke walked four batters in Game Two, and three of them
  84. went on to score as the Yankees countered single Cub runs in the first and
  85. third with pairs of their own on two walks and two singles in each frame. (A
  86. fifth Yankee run--on two singles without bases on balls--concluded the scoring
  87. for the game.)
  88.      Game Three featured not only the two homers each by Ruth and Gehrig, but
  89. home runs by the Cubs' Kiki Cuyler and Gabby Hartnett.  Hartnett's solo shot
  90. in the last of the ninth brought Chicago to within two runs of New York for
  91. the Series' closest finish.
  92.      Four first-inning singles, Frank Demaree's three-run homer, and a Yankee
  93. error gave the Cubs a 4-1 advantage early in Game Four--their biggest lead of
  94. the Series.  But by game's end, 19 Yankee hits (including two home runs by
  95. Tony Lazzeri and one by Earle Combs) had created 13 Yankee runs, and the world
  96. title was theirs.
