  90.      For the second year in a row, the A's met the Cardinals in the Series,
  91. and once again pitchers Lefty Grove and George Earnshaw provided more than 80
  92. percent of the Athletics' pitching, performing splendidly and winning three
  93. games between them.  But this time Cardinal pitchers Wild Bill Hallahan and
  94. Burleigh Grimes outshone them, winning two games apiece to bring St. Louis the
  95. world championship.
  96.      Grove gave up four hits and two runs in the first inning of the opener,
  97. but shut out the Cards the rest of the way as the A's scored six off Paul
  98. Derringer to take the Series lead.  Earnshaw also held St. Louis to two runs
  99. the next day--both manufactured by Pepper Martin's daring baserunning.  But
  100. they were more than enough for Hallahan, who shut out the A's on three
  101. singles.
  102.      The Cardinals took their first Series lead in Game Three, scoring five
  103. times off Grove and reliever Roy Mahaffey while Grimes held the A's hitless
  104. through seven innings and scoreless through eight before giving up a harmless
  105. two-run homer to Al Simmons in the bottom of the ninth.  But the A's came back
  106. to even the Series the next day on Earnshaw's two-hit shutout.
  107.      Pepper Martin, the Cardinal hero of Game Two, homered for two runs in
  108. Game Five, and drove in two more of St. Louis' five runs with a sacrifice fly
  109. and a single.  Meanwhile pitcher Hallahan held Philadelphia to a lone run,
  110. returning the Series lead to the Cardinals with his second win.
  111.      Game Six pitted Grove and Derringer against each other again as in the
  112. opener, and again Grove emerged the victor, holding the Cardinals to one run
  113. and five hits.  The Athletics scored four unearned runs in the fifth off the
  114. unfortunate Derringer who, after an error put a runner on base to open the
  115. inning, gave up two singles and walked four, including two with the bases
  116. full, before leaving the game.  Four more Philadelphia runs in the seventh
  117. (two of them scoring on a dropped fly ball) gave the A's the Series' only
  118. lopsided win.
  119.      In the finale, Grimes once again held the A's scoreless through eight
  120. before giving up two runs in the ninth.  And once again the runs proved
  121. harmless against an early Cardinal lead, as Hallahan came on to retire Max
  122. Bishop for the final out.
