The surprising success of a surprise starter and the ultimate in big
innings highlighted the return of the Athletics to World Series play after a
gap of fifteen years. In the opener, A's manager Connie Mack passed over the
aces of his pitching staff in favor of Howard Ehmke, an aging journeyman who
that season had started only eight times and pitched under 55 innings. But
Ehmke, who (per Mack's instructions) had studied the Cubs' hitters in a series
of late-season games, held the Cubs scoreless through the first eight innings
of Game One (yielding an unearned run in the last of the ninth) while fanning
13 batters for a new Series record. Chicago's Charlie Root also pitched
effectively until Jimmie Foxx's solo homer in the seventh gave the A's the
game's first score. A pair of errors by Cub shortstop Woody English in the
ninth set up two unearned runs against reliever Guy Bush and gave Ehmke and
the A's all the lead they needed.
Home runs by Foxx and Al Simmons drove in five of the A's nine runs in
Game Two as Philadelphia took a 2-0 Series lead. But Guy Bush held Mack's
sluggers to nine singles and one run in Game Three as his Cubs scored three
runs in the sixth to take their first win.
The Cubs seemed well on their way to tying the Series in Game Four as
they entered the last of the seventh with an 8-0 lead. But Simmons led off
with a homer to erase Charlie Root's shutout, and five of the next six batters
singled. Art Nehf relieved Root, but the first batter to face him--Mule
Haas--lofted a fly to center which Hack Wilson lost in the sun for a three-run
inside-the-park homer, and the score was 8-7. After walking Mickey Cochrane,
Nehf was replaced by Sheriff Blake, who gave up two singles and saw the tying
run come home before Pat Malone took the mound with two men still on base and
only one away. Malone struck out two in a row to end the inning--but not
until he first hit a batter and gave up a double by Jimmy Dykes for the two
runs that gave the A's a 10-8 win and a 3-1 Series advantage.
Game Five, although inevitably anticlimactic, was not decided until the
final at-bat. Chicago scored twice off Ehmke in the fourth as Malone shut out
the A's with only two hits through eight. But in the last of the ninth a
single and Haas' home run tied the score, and--with two men out--Simmons
doubled, Foxx was walked intentionally, Bing Miller doubled, and the Series
was history.
