The Pirates, who struggled to a narrow pennant win in a four-team race,
were no slouches at the bat. Their team BA of .305 led the National League,
and in the Waner brothers--Paul and Lloyd--and Pie Traynor they had three of
the league's five top hitters. But in the World Series they came up against a
Yankee team that is still widely regarded as the game's greatest ever. With
110 season victories and a 19-game margin over second-place Philadelphia, the
Yankees led the American League in nearly every offensive category. Three
Yankees--Earle Combs, Lou Gehrig, and Babe Ruth--hit over .350, and divided
among them league crowns in runs, hits, doubles, triples, home runs (Ruth's
60), RBIs, and slugging average. The Yankees not only hit: their pitching
staff boasted the league's lowest earned run average.
In the Series, though, it was Pittsburgh's erratic play that brought
about the first American League sweep. The Pirates scored four times off
Yankee starter Waite Hoyt in Game One, and might have won the game. But Paul
Waner misplayed a Gehrig fly for a run-scoring triple in the first, and in the
third, two Pirate errors led to three more Yankee runs. A final run in the
fifth was all New York needed to win, 5-4.
The Yankees won the next two games more convincingly, with strong
pitching and timely hitting. George Pipgras held Pittsburgh to two runs in
Game Two as his Yankees bunched seven of their 11 hits into the third and
eighth innings (also taking advantage of two walks and a hit batsman in the
eighth) for their six runs. And in Game Three--as Herb Pennock pitched
perfectly into the eighth inning before yielding two hits and a run--Yankee
batters again bunched most of their hits into two innings, scoring two runs on
Gehrig's first-inning triple and six more in the seventh, climaxed by Ruth's
three-run homer.
Pittsburgh took advantage of two Yankee errors in the seventh inning of
Game Four to score two runs and tie the game at three-all. But in the last of
the ninth, after the Pirates' Johnny Miljus had struck out Gehrig and Bob
Meusel with the bases loaded, his second wild pitch of the inning undid
him--Combs scored from third with the Series' winning run.
