In close pennant races, the Red Sox repeated as league champions and
Brooklyn won its first pennant since 1900. The first three games of the
Series were tightly contested, and the outcomes were determined by only one
run apiece. For 6 1/2 innings in the opener, Brooklyn's Rube Marquard dueled
Boston's Ernie Shore about equally. But in the last of the seventh the Sox
capitalized on a double, some sloppy Brooklyn fielding, and a couple of
sacrifice hits for three runs, adding another off reliever Jeff Pfeffer in the
eighth for a 6-1 lead. The Robins fought back in the ninth, driving out Shore
and drawing within one run of a tie before reliever Carl Mays retired the
final man with the bases loaded.
Game Two was even tighter. Boston starter Babe Ruth gave up a
first-inning inside-the-park homer to Hy Myers, but in the third he drove in
Everett Scott (who had tripled) to tie the game at 1-1. Then for the next ten
innings he and Robin pitcher Sherry Smith shut off all scoring. Ruth
continued to blank Brooklyn in the fourteenth, and in the last of the inning a
walk, sacrifice, and single over the head of the third baseman gave Boston and
Ruth the victory.
Brooklyn veteran Jack Coombs took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning of
Game Three before weakening. But after giving up a third Boston run on Larry
Gardner's one-out homer in the seventh, he was relieved by Jeff Pfeffer, who
set the Sox down in order the rest of the way. In saving what proved to be
Coombs' last World Series appearance (as well as the Robins' only Series
win), Pfeffer preserved Coombs' perfect Series won-lost record at 5-0.
Games Four and Five proved anticlimactic. In Game Four, Gardner's second
homer of the Series--inside the park for three runs in the second
inning--overcame the Robins' two runs in the first. The Sox added a run here
and there to increase their lead, while Sox starter Dutch Leonard shut
Brooklyn out through the final eight innings for a comfortable 6-2 win. And
in what became the Series finale, Ernie Shore held the Robins to three singles
and one unearned run as his Sox took advantage of a bad-hop triple in the
second and two third-inning errors by Robin shortstop Ivy Olson to take the
lead--and their fourth world championship.
