  68.      Boston's five runs in Game Five were the most scored by either team in a
  69. Series characterized by outstanding pitching.  It was also one of the most
  70. closely contested Series:  the deciding run was not scored until the ninth
  71. inning in three of the games, and only in Game One was the margin of victory
  72. as much as two runs.
  73.      Grover Cleveland Alexander pitched the opener for the Phillies, and while
  74. the Red Sox tagged him for eight hits, they were all singles, and not until
  75. the eighth inning did one manage to drive a runner home.  Boston's Ernie Shore
  76. pitched just as well, giving up only five singles and four walks.  But two
  77. Phillie hits produced a run in the fourth, and an alternating pair of walks
  78. and infield hits in the eighth broke the tie with two runs for the Phillies'
  79. only win.
  80.      The next three games were 2-1 Boston victories.  Rube Foster held the
  81. Phillies to three hits in Game Two, and led his team at the bat, going 3 for
  82. 4, including a double in the fifth.  But it was his single in the ninth with a
  83. man on second that produced what proved to be the winning run as he retired
  84. the side in the bottom of the ninth to preserve his win.  Dutch Leonard
  85. duplicated Foster's three-hit pitching two days later as the Series moved to
  86. Boston's spacious new Braves Field for Game Three.  Before a new Series record
  87. crowd of 42,300, Leonard defeated the great Alexander, as the Sox' Duffy
  88. Lewis--with his third hit of the game--singled over second base to score Harry
  89. Hooper from third with two out in the bottom of the ninth.
  90.      Ernie Shore returned to the mound for Boston in Game Four, and although
  91. he gave up more hits (seven) than he had in Game One, his Sox had scored their
  92. two runs before the Phillies put across their one in the eighth.
  93.      Rube Foster was not as effective in Game Five as he had been in Game Two,
  94. twice giving the Phillies a two-run lead as Phillie first baseman Fred Luderus
  95. drove in three runs with a double and a home run.  But from the fifth inning
  96. on, Foster held Philadelphia scoreless on two hits, while Duffy Lewis evened
  97. the score with a two-run homer in the eighth, and Harry Hooper (who had tied
  98. the score earlier with a home run in the third) won the game and the Series
  99. with a second homer in the top of the ninth.
