The Athletics, easy winners of their fourth pennant in five years, were
clear favorites over Boston. But the "Miracle Braves"--who moved from last
place to first between July 18 and August 25 and kept going to take the
pennant by 10 1/2 games--had the momentum and swept the Series.
Boston pitcher Dick Rudolph (who won 27 games during the season) limited
the A's to five hits and an unearned run, to take the opener behind the
Braves' heavy hitting, 7-1. But the rest of the games were not won so easily.
Philadelphia's Eddie Plank held the Braves scoreless through eight
innings of Game Two, and gave up only one run in the ninth. But the Braves'
Bill James (26-7 during the season) allowed only two hits and no runs at all.
Game Three was a seesaw affair not settled until the twelfth inning.
Through ten innings, starters Lefty Tyler of Boston and Joe Bush of the A's
traded runs. Philadelphia scored one in the top of the first, but Braves'
catcher Hank Gowdy doubled in the tying run in the second. The teams traded
runs again in the fourth, but no one else crossed the plate until the tenth,
when Frank Baker's bases-loaded single drove in two. For the third time, the
Braves came back to tie it up. Gowdy opened the last of the tenth with the
Series' only home run, and after a walk and single, a sacrifice fly knotted
the score. Bill James came on to pitch no-hit ball through the eleventh and
twelfth. Bush remained in for the A's, retiring the side in the eleventh.
But an inning later Gowdy opened with his third crucial hit of the game, a
double. Les Mann replaced him as runner, and after a walk, bunt, and wild
throw to third, Mann scampered home with the winning run.
Two of Connie Mack's most promising young pitchers, Bob Shawkey and Herb
Pennock (who would later find stardom as New York Yankees), shared the A's
pitching in Game Four, and gave up only six hits between them. But a walk and
an error led to a Boston run in the fourth, and although Shawkey himself
doubled in the tying run a half inning later, two more Braves scored in the
last of the fifth on Johnny Evers' single. Pennock came on to pitch three
innings of shutout relief, but Rudolph held the A's hitless over the final
four innings to preserve his second win and the Braves' crown.
