The Giants outhit the Red Sox by 50 percentage points, and their pitchers
let in one less earned run per game. But this was the Series in which Fred
Snodgrass' famous muff of a routine fly to center in the tenth inning of the
final game helped turn a slim Giant lead into a Red Sox world championship. In
all fairness, it must be admitted that Snodgrass followed his muff with a
brilliant catch off the next batter, and indecision by the catcher and first
baseman permitted a pop foul to drop, keeping the Sox alive to score the tying
and winning runs. For that matter, this final game might not have been needed
at all if Snodgrass and Beals Becker hadn't both been cut down trying to steal
second in the eleventh inning of Game Two, which ended in a tie because of
darkness. If either had gone on to score, the Giants would have won the
Series in seven games.
Boston's Smokey Joe Wood followed up his spectacular 34-5 regular season
with Series wins in Games One and Four, before being rocked for six runs in
the first inning of Game Seven for a loss. Relieving in the eighth inning of
the finale, he stopped the Giants for two innings, but gave up what would have
been the losing run in the tenth had not the Giants' fielding in the last of
the inning turned the game around, giving Wood the win and the Sox the Series.
Although Wood won three games, the best pitching of the Series was turned
in by the Giants' Rube Marquard and Boston's Hugh Bedient. Marquard (who in
the regular season had tied a major league record with 19 consecutive wins)
won two of his club's three victories (Games Three and Six), allowing three
runs--only one of them earned. Bedient, in two starts and two relief
appearances, matched Marquard's 0.50 earned run average, winning a duel with
Christy Mathewson in Game Five, and hurling seven effective innings against
Matty in the finale.
Mathewson was the Series' hard-luck pitcher: his one tie and two losses
were all decided by unearned runs.
