  68.      The Tigers won their final game of the season to take their second
  69. straight pennant, and the Cubs won their third pennant in a row by defeating
  70. the Giants in a replay of an earlier tie.  Ty Cobb and Detroit improved on
  71. their 1907 Series performance, as Cobb led his club in batting, hits, and
  72. RBIs, and the Tigers won a game.  But the Cubs as a team hit 90 percentage
  73. points higher than Detroit, and outscored them 24-15, to take the Series with
  74. relative ease.
  75.      In Game One, the Tigers took advantage of the Cubs' ragged fielding to
  76. score two runs in the eighth for a 6-5 lead.  But in the top of the ninth, the
  77. Cubs erupted for five runs on six consecutive singles and a double steal, to
  78. win the game.  The next day Chicago's Orval Overall held Detroit to four hits
  79. and one ninth-inning run.  The Tigers' Wild Bill Donovan pitched even better
  80. for seven innings, holding Pittsburgh to a single in the sixth.  But in the
  81. eighth, Joe Tinker's two-run homer--the first in a World Series since
  82. 1903--began an assault that ended only after six Cubs had crossed the plate.
  83.      Detroit finally manufactured a Series win, pummeling Jack Pfiester in
  84. Game Three for ten hits (six of them in the sixth inning) and an 8-3 victory.
  85. But that was their last burst.  As the Series moved to Detroit for Games Four
  86. and Five, the Tiger offense collapsed.  Three Finger Brown, the winner as a
  87. reliever in Game One, won Game Four as a starter, shutting out the Tigers on
  88. four hits.  The Cubs needed only three of their ten hits, combining them with
  89. a couple of walks and stolen bases, and a muffed fly ball, to score twice in
  90. the third inning and once in the ninth.
  91.      Only 6,210 spectators--the smallest World Series crowd of the
  92. century--saw Overall strike out four Tigers in the first inning of Game Five
  93. (one reached first on a wild pitch) in what became a three-hit shutout.
  94. Meanwhile, his Cubs unloaded for ten hits, defeating Donovan a second time,
  95. scoring runs in the first and fifth innings.  Overall--after yielding a
  96. leadoff walk to Cobb in the fifth--retired Cobb on a force play and set down
  97. the final 11 men to face him.
