The Tigers won their final game of the season to take their second
straight pennant, and the Cubs won their third pennant in a row by defeating
the Giants in a replay of an earlier tie. Ty Cobb and Detroit improved on
their 1907 Series performance, as Cobb led his club in batting, hits, and
RBIs, and the Tigers won a game. But the Cubs as a team hit 90 percentage
points higher than Detroit, and outscored them 24-15, to take the Series with
relative ease.
In Game One, the Tigers took advantage of the Cubs' ragged fielding to
score two runs in the eighth for a 6-5 lead. But in the top of the ninth, the
Cubs erupted for five runs on six consecutive singles and a double steal, to
win the game. The next day Chicago's Orval Overall held Detroit to four hits
and one ninth-inning run. The Tigers' Wild Bill Donovan pitched even better
for seven innings, holding Pittsburgh to a single in the sixth. But in the
eighth, Joe Tinker's two-run homer--the first in a World Series since
1903--began an assault that ended only after six Cubs had crossed the plate.
Detroit finally manufactured a Series win, pummeling Jack Pfiester in
Game Three for ten hits (six of them in the sixth inning) and an 8-3 victory.
But that was their last burst. As the Series moved to Detroit for Games Four
and Five, the Tiger offense collapsed. Three Finger Brown, the winner as a
reliever in Game One, won Game Four as a starter, shutting out the Tigers on
four hits. The Cubs needed only three of their ten hits, combining them with
a couple of walks and stolen bases, and a muffed fly ball, to score twice in
the third inning and once in the ninth.
Only 6,210 spectators--the smallest World Series crowd of the
century--saw Overall strike out four Tigers in the first inning of Game Five
(one reached first on a wild pitch) in what became a three-hit shutout.
Meanwhile, his Cubs unloaded for ten hits, defeating Donovan a second time,
scoring runs in the first and fifth innings. Overall--after yielding a
leadoff walk to Cobb in the fifth--retired Cobb on a force play and set down
the final 11 men to face him.
