The Cubs and White Sox have played more postseason City Series than any
other clubs, but this was their only all-Chicago World Series. The Cubs were
the clear favorites: league leaders in batting, fielding, and pitching (with
a team ERA of only 1.76). They were one of baseball's greatest teams ever,
with a still-record 116 wins, finishing 20 games ahead of the second-place
Giants. The White Sox, by contrast, although their pitching and fielding were
good enough to rank second in the American League, were the junior circuit's
weakest hitters, batting as a team only .230, 32 points below the Cubs. But
in the Series the "hitless wonders" prevailed. Though they hit only .198 and
yielded eight unearned runs to the Cubs' two, the Sox bunched their hits for
20 earned runs--double the Cubs' total. Meanwhile, Sox pitchers held the Cubs
to a .196 BA, and produced a team ERA less than half that of Cub pitchers.
Game One was a pitcher's duel as the Cubs' Mordecai (Three Finger) Brown
and the Sox' Nick Altrock traded four-hitters and one earned run apiece. But
Brown lost the game when his error in the seventh led to the Sox' second run.
The Cubs snapped back to take Game Two on Ed Reulbach's one-hit 7-1 win.
Although Reulbach issued six walks, he didn't really need the five unearned
runs handed his club by Sox errors.
In Game Three the Sox regained the Series lead as Ed Walsh two-hit the
Cubs, fanning 12 for the Series' first shutout. The Cubs' Jack Pfiester also
pitched shutout ball in eight of his nine innings, but George Rohe's
bases-loaded triple in the sixth gave the Sox more than enough to defeat him.
Brown brought the Cubs back the next day, evening the Series with a two-hit
shutout of his own, winning when Altrock yielded his only run on pairs of
singles and sacrifice bunts in the seventh.
The rest of the Series belonged to the hitless wonders, who rocked three
Cub pitchers for 12 hits and eight runs to take Game Five, and buried Brown
and Orval Overall under 14 hits and another eight runs in Game Six to capture
their first world championship.
