After a year's gap caused by the Giants' refusal to play the American
League champion Boston Pilgrims, the World Series--now established on an
official and permanent basis--resumed with a pitching classic. Even though
the A's ERA league leader Rube Waddell had ostensibly injured his shoulder and
could not pitch in the Series--rumor had it that gamblers had reached him--the
Philadelphia staff recorded a Series ERA of only 1.47. But the Giants'
staff--led by Christy Mathewson's three shutouts--registered a matchless ERA
of 0.00, permitting only three unearned runs to score in their only Series
loss. Every victory in the Series was a shutout.
Mathewson, a 31-game winner in the regular season, continued his winning
ways in the Series opener. Though three of the four hits he yielded were
doubles, he permitted no more than one hit in any inning, and stopped the only
scoring threat, fielding a squeeze bunt to throw out the runner at the plate
in the sixth inning.
The A's came back to tie the Series the next day. This time it was Chief
Bender's turn to hurl a four-hit shutout. Joe McGinnity also pitched well for
the Giants, but New York errors in the third and eighth innings let in three
unearned runs--the only runs, as it turned out, to be scored against the
Giants in the Series.
Mathewson, pitching with only two days' rest in Game Three, once again
permitted only four hits (all singles this time), and Philadelphia's flawed
fielding let in seven unearned runs to help give Matty an easy 9-0 win. In
Game Four, McGinnity, the hard-luck loser of Game Two, tried again. This time
the Giants supported him almost flawlessly, while he gave up only five singles
on his way to victory in the Series' tightest game. An A's error led to a
single Giant run, and a loss for Eddie Plank, who had pitched even better than
McGinnity, giving up only four hits while fanning six.
Chief Bender, the A's winner in Game Two, pitched a five-hitter in Game
Six, but he also yielded three walks, all of which contributed to the two
Giant runs. Mathewson, though he gave up six hits, walked none, retiring the
final ten batters to conclude his record third shutout--and the Series.
