  58.      Pennant-winning Brooklyn led the NL in hitting, but runner-up Pittsburgh
  59. claimed the best pitching.  Honus Wagner was the only Pirate regular to hit
  60. over .300, but he enjoyed what turned out to be his finest season offensively,
  61. leading the league with a .381 batting average.  Pittsburghers believed their
  62. club superior to Brooklyn and a best-of-five "world championship" series was
  63. arranged, with all the games to be played in Pittsburgh for a silver cup
  64. donated by the Pittsburgh Chronicle-Telegraph.  Brooklyn, however, proved that
  65. its pennant was no fluke.
  66.      Two of the game's best pitchers faced off in the opener:  Pittsburgh's
  67. Rube Waddell, who had led the league in ERA, and Joe "Iron Man" McGinnity,
  68. whose 29 regular-season wins totaled nine more than those of the league's
  69. runners-up.  McGinnity prevailed, shutting out the Pirates until two unearned
  70. runs came across in the top of the ninth.  Pirate errors also gave Brooklyn a
  71. pair of unearned runs, but Waddell lost the game on hits--thirteen in all,
  72. including six in the Superbas' three-run third inning.
  73.      In Game Two, Brooklyn's Frank Kitson held Pittsburgh to four hits, and
  74. although his Superbas scored only one earned run, six Pirate errors gave them
  75. their second win, 4-2.
  76.      The Pirates staved off a Series sweep with sharp pitching and heavy
  77. hitting in Game Three.  Deacon Phillippe shut out Brooklyn on six hits as the
  78. Pirates jumped on Harry Howell for thirteen.  All the Pirate hits were
  79. singles, but combined with Brooklyn errors they were good for ten runs, seven
  80. of them unearned.
  81.      Three Brooklyn singles and a fumble by Pirate pitcher Sam Leever in the
  82. fourth inning of Game Four gave the Superbas three runs and a 4-0 lead the
  83. Pirates could not overcome.  Brooklyn hurler McGinnity scattered nine Pirate
  84. hits and, supported by flawless fielding, held Pittsburgh to a single run to
  85. bring Brooklyn its first World Series triumph in three tries--and its last
  86. until 1955.  The Brooklyn players voted to award their trophy to McGinnity for
  87. his fine pitching.  The cup may be seen today--along with the Temple Cup and
  88. the current World Series trophy--at baseball's Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
