Boston had edged Baltimore in a close race for the NL pennant, but the
Orioles turned the tables on the Beaneaters in Temple Cup play. The Series
was a high-scoring affair, the winner of each game averaging eleven runs, the
loser eight.
The opener, in Boston, set the tone for the games. Baltimore sent four
runners across the plate in the top of the first inning, and Boston followed
in its half with three. The Beaneaters recorded only twelve hits in the game
to the Orioles' twenty, but they also received seven walks from Baltimore
hurler Jerry Nops, and five of those runners scored. The lead switched back
and forth in the middle innings, but Boston scored two final runs in the
eighth and hung on for a 13-12 win.
Baltimore's Joe Corbett gave up sixteen hits (one a home run) and four
walks in Game Two as Boston scored eleven times. But Boston's two pitchers,
Fred Klobedanz and Jack Stivetts, were even more generous, handing out
seventeen hits (including three homers--one of them to opposing pitcher
Corbett, who also hit a double and two singles) and five walks as the Orioles
evened the Series with their thirteen-run attack.
Game Three was the Series' lowest in run production, with Baltimore
scoring four in the second inning and another four in the third for an 8-3
win. But rain ended the game before Boston could complete its time at bat in
the last of the eighth, which erased from the record four more Oriole runs
scored earlier in the inning. Rather than waste the two free days before the
Series resumed in Baltimore, the two clubs played a pair of exhibition games
in Worcester and Springfield, Massachusetts. Baltimore won them both, 11-10
and 8-6.
The Orioles continued their roll in Series Game Four, with another close
but high-scoring victory, 12-11. It looked at first like a blowout as
Baltimore scored six runs in the first inning and five more in the second.
But Ted Lewis relieved Boston starter Jack Stivetts and held Baltimore to just
one further run as the Beaneaters fought back to within one run of a tie
before faltering in the ninth.
Boston batters hit Oriole Bill Hoffer safely fifteen times in Game Five,
but only three Beaneaters scored. Baltimore, with two fewer hits, garnered
six more runs than Boston and, with their fourth win, the right to hold the
cup for another year. But attendance at the final game was so small the
embarrassed Baltimore management refused to release the figures, and the
league gave the cup back to Mr. Temple rather than sponsor another
unprofitable Series. There was no postseason championship contest in 1898 or
1899.
