  78.      Interleague squabbling prevented a World Series in 1891, and the AA
  79. folded before the next season.  Four AA clubs were taken into the NL,
  80. expanding the NL to twelve teams.  To create a postseason championship series,
  81. the regular season was divided in half, with first-half winner Boston meeting
  82. second-half victor Cleveland for both the league and world titles.
  83.      The first game, in Cleveland, was a pitching and fielding classic.
  84. Boston's Jack Stivetts and Cleveland's Cy Young blanked the opposition for
  85. eleven innings before darkness halted the game.  Young yielded just six hits
  86. and Stivetts four--all singles.  Just as remarkable in an era when errors were
  87. commonplace, Cleveland committed only one and Boston none; several outstanding
  88. plays were made in the field.
  89.      Boston center fielder Hugh Duffy was the offensive and defensive star of
  90. Game Two.  He drove in three of the Beaneaters' four runs (with a fly out, a
  91. triple, and a double), and scored the fourth himself after tripling a second
  92. time.  And in the bottom of the ninth he snared a leadoff liner with a great
  93. running catch.  As it was, Cleveland scored once in the inning to pull within
  94. a run of a tie; Duffy's catch prevented a certain tie and a possible Cleveland
  95. win.  Game Three was just as close.  Pitchers Stivetts and Young each gave up
  96. two early runs, but then blanked their foes until the seventh inning, when
  97. Boston's Tommy McCarthy singled in Stivetts (who had doubled) with what proved
  98. the winning run.
  99.      The Series moved to Boston for the next three games.  In Game Four,
  100. Boston ace Kid Nichols shut out the Spiders, scattering seven hits and fanning
  101. eight.  Cleveland's Nig Cuppy yielded only six hits, but one was a home run
  102. ball to Hugh Duffy for two runs in the third inning, and another was a two-run
  103. single to Joe Quinn in the sixth.  Cleveland pitcher John Clarkson helped his
  104. own cause the next day with a three-run homer in the Spider's six-run second
  105. inning.  But Boston pitcher Jack Stivetts--with the score now 7-5 Cleveland in
  106. the sixth--tripled in a run and scored the tying run.  In the seventh,
  107. Stivetts scored Boston's twelfth (and final) run after singling, while holding
  108. Cleveland scoreless through the final four innings.
  109.      Two days later the Beaneaters brought the Series to an end with their
  110. fifth straight win.  The Spiders scored first, with a three-run third, but
  111. pitcher Kid Nichols held them scoreless after that and singled home Boston's
  112. tying and go-ahead runs himself as the Beaneaters tagged Cy Young for eight
  113. runs over the final six innings.
