  114.      Six wins was the magic number this year, and it was agreed that--unlike
  115. most previous Series--play would not continue beyond the deciding game.  At
  116. first it seemed Brooklyn might prevail, with an assistant from the dark of
  117. night. The Giants wanted the opening game called for darkness after the
  118. seventh inning, when they led 10-8.  But the umpires held off until Brooklyn,
  119. in the deepening gloom, had scored four runs in the last of the eighth to go
  120. ahead 12-10.
  121.      The next day, in Brooklyn before more than 16,000 spectators (by far the
  122. largest World Series crowd to that time), Giant Ed "Cannonball" Crane held the
  123. Grooms to four hits as New York evened the Series.  But Brooklyn won the next
  124. two for a 3-1 Series advantage.  In Game Three, ahead 8-7 in the sixth inning,
  125. the Grooms began stalling, waiting for darkness to fall.  The score was still
  126. 8-7 when the game was finally halted in the top of the ninth with one out and
  127. three Giants on base.
  128.      Darkness for a third time gave Brooklyn the victory in Game Four.  New
  129. York overcame a 7-2 Bridegroom lead to tie the score with five runs in the top
  130. of the sixth, but in the bottom of the inning Brooklyn's Tom "Oyster" Burns
  131. homered in the dark for three runs.  The umpires then halted the game.
  132.      The five remaining contests went the distance, and the Giants won them
  133. all.  Cannonball Crane in Game Five gave up eight hits, but homered in his own
  134. behalf, driving in two runs in his Giants' 11-3 rout.  Game Six was a pitching
  135. duel between New York's Hank O'Day and Brooklyn's William "Adonis" Terry.  The
  136. Grooms scored a run in the second inning, but New York tied the game with two
  137. outs in the last of the ninth (when Monte Ward singled, stole second and
  138. third, and scored on Roger Connor's single), and won it with two away in the
  139. eleventh as Ward drove in a speedy Mike Slattery from second with an infield
  140. hit.
  141.      Back-to-back homers by Giants Dan Richardson and Jim O'Rourke highlighted
  142. an eight-run second inning in Game Seven.  The Giants' eventual 11-7 win gave
  143. them their first Series advantage.  In Game Eight, two of Brooklyn's five hits
  144. were home runs.  But the Giants outscored the Grooms 12-2 over the first four
  145. innings and beat them 16-7.
  146.      With their backs to the wall, the Bridegrooms scored first in Game Nine
  147. and held a 2-1 lead after five innings.  But New York tied the score in the
  148. sixth and went ahead 3-2 on a passed ball in the seventh.  Meanwhile Giant
  149. pitcher Hank O'Day (although he walked five batters) blanked the Grooms on
  150. just two hits after the first inning to bring New York its second straight
  151. world championship.
