  119.      St. Louis, AA champions for the fourth straight year, battled the Giants
  120. closely through several games, but blowout losses in Games Six and Eight undid
  121. them.  The first three games were played in New York.  In a splendidly pitched
  122. opener, Brown ace Charles "Silver" King held New York to two hits and a walk
  123. while Giant ace Tim Keefe limited the Browns to three hits and a walk,
  124. striking out nine on his way to a narrow 2-1 win.  St. Louis evened the Series
  125. in Game Two behind the shutout pitching of Elton "Icebox" Chamberlain.  Tommy
  126. McCarthy scored the Browns' first run in the second inning when, after
  127. singling, he moved around to third on two passed balls by Giant catcher Buck
  128. Ewing and came home on Ewing's failed attempt to throw out a runner stealing
  129. second.  Two more runs in the ninth gave St. Louis more than enough insurance
  130. for the win.
  131.      The Giants scored twice in the first inning of Game Three, and increased
  132. their lead to 4-0 before allowing St. Louis a pair of harmless runs in the
  133. final innings.  They also scored first and led all the way in Game Four
  134. (played in Brooklyn) as another St. Louis rally fell short.  The Browns took a
  135. 4-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth in Game Five (in New York), but a
  136. five-run Giant rally reversed the lead--and the outcome--as the game was
  137. called for darkness with St. Louis at bat in the ninth.
  138.      Giant Mickey Welch hurled a three-hitter (in Philadelphia) the next day,
  139. but St. Louis, capitalizing on walks and a questionable "safe" call at home,
  140. carried a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning.  New York exploded in the late
  141. innings for 11 runs, however, and when darkness ended the game after eight the
  142. Giants were just one win away from the title.
  143.      The final four games were played in St. Louis.  The Browns spoiled New
  144. York's hope of quick victory in Game Seven, coming from behind to tie the
  145. score with three runs in the fourth, and--after New York had scored twice in
  146. the sixth--recovering again with a four-run eighth for a 7-5 lead before
  147. darkness again halted play after eight innings.  But the Browns' win only
  148. delayed the inevitable.  The Giants hammered Icebox Chamberlain for twelve
  149. hits in Game Eight (including home runs by Buck Ewing and Mike Tiernan) to
  150. clinch their first world championship with an 11-3 win.
  151.      The final two games meant nothing to the outcome, and both clubs used
  152. reserve pitchers in Game Nine.  But St. Louis rewarded the small crowd with a
  153. two-run rally in the ninth to tie the game at 11-all and scored three more
  154. runs in the tenth to win it.  The finale the next day again featured heavy
  155. hitting on both sides, including a trio of home runs (one of them Tip
  156. O'Neill's second in two days) and an 18-7 St. Louis romp.
