It was a winner-take-all Series, with the club that won four games
pocketing the entire proceeds. Attendance, very good for those days, averaged
over 7,000 per game and brought the victorious Browns about $14,000.
The first three games were played in Chicago. The White Stockings won
the opener on a sparkling five-hit shutout by their ace John Clarkson. But
St. Louis' Bob Caruthers improved on Clarkson's performance the next day,
blanking Chicago on just two singles as his Browns turned thirteen hits and
thirteen Chicago errors into twelve runs (in a game shortened by darkness to
eight innings). The White Stockings improved their fielding in the next game
(which was also called after eight innings), and this time their bats came
alive. With eleven hits (including home runs by Mike "King" Kelly and George
Gore) combining with seven St. Louis errors, they regained the Series
advantage with an easy 11-4 win.
When the venue shifted to St. Louis, though, the Browns battled back. In
a back-and-forth battle in Game Four, Chicago tied the game at 5-5 with a pair
of runs in the sixth, but St. Louis scored three final runs a half inning
later, winning when darkness ended play in the middle of the seventh.
Game Five repeated Game Two's innovation: two umpires (instead of the
usual one), plus a "referee" who stood between the pitcher and second base.
The umpiring satisfied everyone, but Chicago, handicapped by their scheduled
pitcher's sore arm, lost when they sent shortstop Ned Williamson and right
fielder Jimmy Ryan into the box. In the 6 1/2 innings before dark, St. Louis
got to Williamson and Ryan for eleven hits and ten runs as their Nat Hudson
held Chicago batters to three hits and three unearned runs.
The finale proved to be the Series' best-played and closest game.
Chicago's Clarkson shut out the Browns through seven innings as his mates
built a three-run lead--one of them scored on Fred's Pfeffer's homer in the
fourth. Rain (and a rowdy crowd which poured onto the field) halted play for
a while in the fifth. But the game resumed and the rain subsided. In the
last of the eighth, Charlie Comiskey scored the Browns' first run on a single,
errant throw and run-scoring fly out, and Arlie Latham tripled home two more
runners later in the inning to tie the game. The score remained 3-3 into the
last of the tenth, when the Browns' Curt Welch singled (for only the fourth
St. Louis hit), went to second on an infield hit, and took third on a
sacrifice. Welch then attempted to steal home but catcher Kelly had smelled
out the play and called for a pitch out. Clarkson's delivery was poor and
bobbled by Kelly, allowing Welch to steal home with a "$15,000 slide" for the
Browns' triumph.
