Before the start of the final game, the two clubs agreed to throw out
Game Two, which had been forfeited to Chicago, leaving the Series tied at two
wins apiece, plus the one tie. But after the Browns won the seventh game for
their third victory, Chicago manager Cap Anson decided his club should retain
its forfeit win after all, and a select committee agreed, leaving the Series
in a tie instead of a White Stocking defeat.
Game One, in Chicago, was called for darkness after eight innings, with
the score tied 5-5. The Browns scored first with a run in the second and
added four more in the top of the fourth. But Chicago came back with a run in
the last of the fourth, and in the bottom of the eighth scored four more on a
walk, two singles, and Fred Pfeffer's game-tying three-run homer.
The Series moved to St. Louis for the next three games. Chicago was
leading 5-4 in the sixth inning of Game Two when Browns manager Charlie
Comiskey pulled his team off the field, objecting to the umpiring of David
Sullivan. Umpire Sullivan later forfeited the game to the White Stockings; he
worked no more in the Series. The Browns won Game Three, scoring five
unearned runs with two out in the top of the first, and holding on for a 7-4
win. Chicago lost again the next day in a much closer game. The Browns
scored first with a run in the third inning, but Abner Dalrymple's two-run
homer in the fifth gave the White Stockings a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the
eighth, however, St. Louis scored twice and held on for the 3-2 win.
The Series took to the road for its final three games. In Pittsburgh for
Game Five, Chicago overwhelmed the Browns 9-2, scoring four runs in the first
inning, and their final three just before darkness ended the game after seven
innings.
Game Six and Seven were played in Cincinnati. The White Stockings won
the sixth game by the same 9-2 score as Game Five. The Browns' two runs were
unearned, as Chicago's Jim McCormick stopped St. Louis on just two hits, both
singles. The Brown's victory in the finale was a runaway 13-4, called in the
eighth for darkness. St. Louis' six-run fourth inning typified the game's
sloppy play, the runs scoring on five hits, four errors, and two passed balls.
