- ViruSafe 4.55 READ.ME
- ---------------------
-
-
- WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 4.55
- --------------------------
-
- Detects More Viruses
- --------------------
- ViruSafe version 4.55 now recognizes 92 more viruses and 277
- additional mutations than the previous version 4.5. While VC
- can automatically recognize and learn the signatures of most
- unknown viruses, this new virus information boosts the power
- of your virus detection system significantly.
-
- New file BOOTREST.COM
- ---------------------
- In addition to the files listed in the documentation,
- ViruSafe will also create the files BOOTREST.COM and READ.ME
- on your Emergency Rescue Diskette. You can use the utility
- BOOTREST.COM to restore the boot sectors and CMOS, or choose
- one of the restore options in PCC, PIC or VSMENU. Consult
- your Emergency Rescue Disk's READ.ME file for specific
- information on restoring your computer's boot sectors and
- CMOS RAM.
-
- New Configuration Options
- -------------------------
- Quick Scanning Option - A new option has been added for
- virus scanning that will dramatically reduce the time needed
- to verify files. If you choose the Quick option, you will
- be able to identify all of the viruses that you can with the
- Normal option, yet the scanning speed is up to 300% faster.
- However, you will not be able to identify multiple viruses
- or multiple infections within files as you will with the
- Normal option.
-
- If you detect a virus with the Quick option, you should
- perform the virus removal operation or delete the file and
- then rescan the files using the Normal scanning method. By
- rescanning with the Normal option you will be sure to catch
- any instances of multiple infections within your files.
-
- Toggle the options with the spacebar or the left and right
- arrow keys. Press Esc to save and exit.
-
- Erase Option - The erase option has been added for users
- that do not want to attempt any virus removal. When the
- erase option is selected, the infected file will be
- automatically erased in order to destroy the virus. Be
- careful when selecting this option, because erased files are
- permanently destroyed and you will not be able to recover
- them with undelete tools like those found in XTreeGold 2.x
- or DOS 5.0.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Toggle the options with the spacebar or the left and right
- arrow keys. Press Esc to save and exit.
-
- VS Monitor Option - Using this menu, you can specify what
- type of protection you would like VS to use as it's default
- settings. The ViruSafe default options are indicated with
- check marks. Toggle the options with the spacebar or the
- left and right arrow keys to mark the option of your choice.
- Press Esc to save and exit.
-
- New Command-Line Option
- -----------------------
- /Q +-(in addition to your other command-line options).
- Invokes the Quick scanning mode. You can use this with a
- plus or minus modifier to enable or disable Quick Scanning.
- The default is Quick Scanning.
-
- Other Changes from the Documentation
- ------------------------------------
- o The Program Integrity Check (PIC) now stores the hidden
- file VS.VS in the root directory of each disk that you
- check, not in a directory \VS as stated in the ViruSafe
- User Guide.
-
- o The PC Checkup program now will display a "Network"
- option from it's main menu if you are attached to a
- network. The Network menu choice will display
- information about the servers to which you are attached.
-
- o The PC Checkup program will allow you to make a copy of
- your boot sectors and partition table before you attempt
- any restoration. This step will allow you to reinstate
- your original information if the restoration is not
- successful.
-
- o When using the drive selection menus in VSMENU (as
- described on page 28), you have some additional options
- if you are operating on a network. Choosing Local will
- act on all Local (non-network) logical drives. Choosing
- All HD will act on all non-floppy or removable drives.
- In addition, if you are using Novell NetWare, you will
- see a box appear with the server and volume name as you
- scroll through the drive listing.
-
- o The 5 1/4" original ViruSafe disk is write-protected so
- that virtually all viruses will find it impossible to
- infect your original diskette. Your 3 1/2" diskette is
- not write-protected, so you should slide the small square
- button in the corner of the diskette so that the tiny
- window is open. This prevents accidental damage or
- overwrite as well.
-
-
-
-
-
- Installing Version 4.55
- -----------------------
- You should use your original, write-protected disks to
- install the new version of ViruSafe. You should always use
- the INSTALL program to properly install ViruSafe on a new
- system. If, however, you've used LapLink or another type of
- computer-to-computer file transfer or you use floppy disks
- to copy your ViruSafe installation, DO NOT COPY THE VS.VS
- FILE. This file is specific to the computer on which
- ViruSafe was originally installed. If you copy this file,
- you could lose data by damaging critical system areas.
-
- To install ViruSafe, insert Disk #1 in either the 5 1/4" or
- 3 1/2" drive and type:
-
- A: (or B:)
- INSTALL
-
- Refer to your ViruSafe User's Guide for complete
- installation instructions.
-
- Upgrading to ViruSafe 4.55
- --------------------------
- If you are upgrading from an earlier version of ViruSafe,
- the system disks that are included in this package contain a
- complete new set of ViruSafe files. They will be used to
- replace the version of ViruSafe that you are currently
- using.
-
- Important Installation Step for Upgrades Only
- ---------------------------------------------
- The Program Integrity Check (PIC) now stores the hidden file
- VS.VS in the root directory of each disk that you check, not
- in a directory \VS as stated in the ViruSafe User Guide.
- Once you have installed ViruSafe version 4.55 you will need
- to move the VS.VS file to the root directory of each disk on
- which you have marked files. If you do not move this file,
- you will have to remark your files with PIC manually. By
- moving the file, you can retain your earlier settings.
-
- To begin this procedure you must first return to DOS and
- make the hidden file VS.VS visible by using the DOS
- Attribute (ATTRIB) command. You can do this by typing:
-
- CD \VS
- ATTRIB -H VS.VS
-
- which will first change to the \VS directory, where the
- VS.VS file was originally stored. The second step will
- remove the hidden attribute from the file VS.VS.
-
-
-
-
-
- Next, you will copy the VS.VS file to the root directory by
- typing:
-
- COPY VS.VS \
- DEL VS.VS
-
- and then delete the original file. Once you have moved the
- file, we can change to the root directory and make the file
- hidden again by typing:
-
- CD \
- ATTRIB +H VS.VS
-
- The procedure is now complete.
-
-
- Note on PIC
- -----------
- If you have installed any new hardware that would modify
- your boot sector (e.g. a new hard drive) or you have used
- LapLink to copy ViruSafe from one computer to another,
- answer Quit or Skip to bypass restoring the boot sector when
- presented with the PIC warning. You should then recalculate
- the values for the boot sector using either PIC or VSMENU.
-
- Note on Checking the Boot Sector
- --------------------------------
- The menu option "Check Boot Sectors Only" found in
- UNVIRUS.EXE (and VSMENU) will check AND REMOVE viruses found
- in the computer's boot sector. This command is a shortcut
- if you are sure that your computer is infected only in the
- boot sector area(s). If for some reason you do not want to
- remove any boot sector viruses that you may encouter, you
- should use the Check Programs option and press Esc
- immediately after the boot sector is examined.
-
- DOS 5.0
- -------
- ViruSafe is fully compatible with DOS 5.0.The ViruSafe
- Monitor(VS.EXE) can be safely loaded high with most memory
- managers. The command with DOS 5.0 would be "LoadHigh VS
- <switches>" or"LH VS <switches>".
-
- When you are formatting new, unformatted diskettes with DOS
- 5.0, you should consider using the /U command-line option
- found in DOS's FORMAT command. A typical command line might
- be "FORMAT A: /U"
-
- This command forces an unconditional format. If VS is loaded
- and is checking the diskette boot sectors, a delay of a few
- seconds may be noted. This is due to a combination of
- checking by DOS and VS. The delay can be reduced
- significantly with the FORMAT /U switch.
-
-
-
-
-
- Using ViruSafe under Windows 3.0 or DESQview
- --------------------------------------------
- If you are using the VS TSR with Windows, DESQview, GEM or
- another windowing environment, you should set the option
- "Check Memory Size Changes" to Off. These environments will
- cause false errors as a result of their normal operation.
-
- To turn the option off permanently, use the VS Monitor
- Defaults option in the configuration menu of VSMENU. Set
- the appropriate options and save your settings. VS will use
- these settings each time you load the program.
-
- To turn the option off temporarily, start VS and toggle the
- option off with the spacebar or the left and right arrow
- keys. Then quit VS by pressing the Esc key. Or, you can
- start VS by typing:
-
- VS /C-
-
- The /C switch is used to control the Check Memory Size
- Changes option.
-
- Printing Under Windows 3.0
- --------------------------
- In some cases, you may experience printing problems with
- Windows 3.0 when you have the VS TSR loaded, especially to
- network printers.
-
- You should not make this change if you're not experiencing
- any problems. However, if you are experiencing
- difficulties, you can solve most problems by editing your
- WIN.INI file. You can edit the file with any text editor,
- including the text editor in PCC. The WIN.INI file has a
- section called [Ports]. A typical line entry under this
- section would look something like this:
-
- LPT1:=
-
- To improve your printing, you should change this entry to
- look like this:
-
- LPT1.PRN:=
-
- This is an example, and you should do this for each port
- that you use for printing. Most systems use LPT1:, but you
- may also have to edit the other ports listed.
-
- After you have edited and saved your WIN.INI file, You will
- have to perform additional configuration from within
- Windows.
-
- Start Windows, or restart Windows if it was already running
- to load the changed WIN.INI values. In the Main Program
- Group, you should have a utility called Control Panel.
-
-
-
-
-
- Start Control Panel and select the Printers icon. The
- Printers area is used to reconfigure your printers. Choose
- the "Configure..."button. For each printer that you have
- installed, match the printer to the appropriate Port entry.
- For example, if your HP Laserjet was installed to LPT1:, you
- should use the Printer utility to configure it to operate on
- the port LPT1.PRN:
-
- Your printer will operate in the same way as it did before
- you installed ViruSafe and you should not notice any
- differences.
-
