  24. 1.  REGISTRATION PROCEDURES
  25.  
  26. If you wish to register your copy of CATDISK, please use the registration form
  27. provided and also see the section of the user manual entitled "Support And
  28. Upgrades."
  29.  
  30. For convenience, you may use your VISA credit card to register with us.  If
  31. registering this way, you may do so by voice at (519) 570-3523, via our online
  32. support system, The Shareware Connection at (519) 570-4132, or right on the
  33. registration form, which you may send by FAX at (519) 884-4887, or by mail.

  35. If paying by check or money order, please be sure that it is drawn on a
  36. Canadian or US bank (we can handle either, whichever is most convenient to
  37. you).

  39. If you are a member of CompuServe, you may also register this program online.
  40. Just enter "GO SWREG" from any menu prompt and follow the instructions that
  41. follow.  Our program ID is #688.  Please note that the registration fee when
  42. using CompuServe is $32 instead of the normal $29.  This is required due to
  43. the fact that CompuServe charges a 15% fee for their services.  Even with the
  44. increased registration fee, our portion only amounts to $27.20.  This option
  45. also does not allow flexibility in allowing you to determine which upgrade
  46. path (if any) that you wish to use in obtaining future CATDISK upgrades... it
  47. only covers the base registration (although you may obtain all future upgrades
  48. from CompuServe).

  52. 2.  EXTRACTING THE CATDISK PROGRAM FILES AND DOCUMENTATION TO DISK
  53.  
  54. We distribute the standard version of CATDISK in the form of a self-extracting
  55. LHA-format archive files which contains this README.1ST file and three other
  56. self-extracting archive files.  These archives are called CATPROGS.EXE, which
  57. contains the main CATDISK program files, CATUTILS.EXE, which contains the
  58. related utility programs and CATDOCS.EXE, which contains the various
  59. documentation files and registration forms for CATDISK.
  60.  
  61. The DPMI-compliant version of CATDISK is distributed in its own archive file
  62. and is not absolutely necessary to use CATDISK and its related utilities.
  63. Depending on the source of the archive, it may be called CDSKxxxD.EXE or
  64. CDxxxD.EXE (the xxx is the version number - example - CDSK721D.EXE).
  65.  
  66. Note that many BBS system operators convert self-extracting archive files to
  67. standard archive file formats, such as ZIP or ARJ.  If this is the case, you
  68. will need the necessary de-archiver to unpack the files.  Please refer to the
  69. archiver's manuals for details on the proper operation.

  71. In the following examples, we will provide instructions dealing with the
  72. self-extracting archives as we distribute them.

  74. If extracting the archives to floppy disks, we will assume that the archive
  75. files themselves are located on the B: drive and that the expanded files will
  76. be installed to the disk in drive A:.  Each disk denoted by title represents a
  77. separate disk.  Please feel free to substitute whatever drive and/or directory
  78. fits your scenario.

  116. If installing to a hard drive, simply copy all distribution files to a
  117. directory and execute all three (or four if you have the DPMI version as well)
  118. self-extracting archive files and delete each as it has been successfully
  119. expanded.

  124. user manual.

  128. 3. IMPORTANT:  UPGRADING YOUR CATALOG FILES TO THIS VERSION.
  129.  
  130. Prior To V2.10
  131. --------------

  133. Some of the critical information stored in current release of CATDISK are not
  134. present in early releases.  You will need to delete all .DTA and .SUM files
  135. created by these early releases and start from scratch.

  138. If You Were Using CATDISK V2.10 to V6.37
  139. ----------------------------------------

  141. This release of CATDISK supports file comments of 43 characters in length and
  142. disk comments in the summary report of 40 characters in length.  You do *NOT*
  143. have to purge your old catalog files and start over... just run the program
  144. CDISKCVT.EXE on each catalog file that you have, select the appropriate
  145. conversion option as outlined in the program and any changes that are necessary
  146. to convert your files to the new format will be made.

  148. The syntax of this command is:

  152. - where catalog_name is the name of the catalog file to be converted.
  153.   (do NOT include the filename extension of .DTA on the command line)

  156. If You Were Using CATDISK V7.00 or Later

  159. Your current catalog files are fully compatible with this release... you do
  160. NOT need to convert them.

  164. 4.  RECALLING YOUR PREVIOUS CONFIGURATION IF USED CATDISK V3.61 OR LATER
  165.  
  166. Before copying the new program files to your work disk, you might want to
  167. rename the executable file from the previous installation (CATDISK.COM or
  168. CATDISK.EXE) to another name.  The new configuration utility, CDISKCFG.EXE
  169. now has the ability to read the configuration information from the release that
  170. you were using for easy installation into this release.  This can save you some
  171. time in setting the program up for your preferences, particularly if you've
  172. customized all the screen colors.

  174. When you run CDISKCFG, hit <F8> and follow the prompts.

  178. 5.  IF YOU ARE MISSING ANY DOCUMENTATION FILES
  179.  
  180. Due to the nature of BBS distribution, it is possible that you may have
  181. received a copy of this program that may be missing one or more of the
  182. documentation files.  If this is the case, and you have a modem on your
  183. computer, you may give our support BBS, The Shareware Connection a call to
  184. obtain documentation files for the current release.

  188. When you have signed on and have arrived at the main menu, enter "F 2", which
  189. is the directory in which all of CATDISK's documentation files are stored
  190. individually.  These files are accessible to anyone calling into the system.

  195. 6. CATDISK PLUS UPDATE
  196.  
  197. Due to the popularity that CATDISK has achieved, and the resulting workload in
  198. keeping up with correspondence, the development of CATDISK PLUS has been
  199. significantly delayed.  Work is progressing, albeit slowly, as we adapt to
  200. the increased workload.  Additionally, as development progresses, new ideas
  201. pop up that are too good to pass up, both on the shareware version of CATDISK,
  202. as well as in CATDISK PLUS.
  203.  
  204. Recently, we have been receiving pre-paid orders for CATDISK PLUS from a fair
  205. number of individuals and corporations.  Unfortunately, these orders cannot be
  206. processed before the product is ready.  Before ordering CATDISK PLUS, please
  207. check with us either by voice at (519) 570-3523, or on our bulletin board
  208. system, The Shareware Connection at (519) 570-4132 for information on CATDISK
  209. PLUS's availability.

  218. 7.  PRINTING DOCUMENTATION
  219.  
  220. To print this README.1ST file, the revision history, the CATDISK user manual,
  221. or any of the registration forms, run the program PRINTDOC.EXE, contained in
  222. the self-extracting documentation file.  This is a menu driven program that is
  223. capable of printing the longer files, such as the user manual in a two-sided
  224. format (i.e. on both sides of the page).  The documentation files and
  225. PRINTDOC.EXE must be in the same directory.
