- About Chief Data Recovery
- ═════════════════════════
-
- Chief Data Recovery Ltd. is a company specializing in data recovery
- of crashed hard disks running under DOS, Novell, Mac and other
- microcomputers. During its last years of service, Chief Data
- Recovery has decided to implement part of its knowledge as a
- software package which may be used by the average PC user to allow
- him to easily handle hard disk problems.
-
- BackInfo is the most useful package for the average user and may
- save him lots of money needed for recovering crashed hard disks at
- a data recovery service.
-
-
- Introduction
- ════════════
-
- The BackInfo package was designed to help in recovering crashed
- hard disks and return them to use in the easiest way. The package
- contain three utilities, two of which are the actual working
- programs and one is a warning module designed to run at system boot
- time.
-
- The basic idea behind the BackInfo package is to create a bootable
- system rescue diskette and to save all information needed to
- recover from a disk crash. This method is much safer then running
- disk fix utilities to refair it after the crash. The information on
- the Rescue diskette is actually the real information from the hard
- disk and no utility can tell what this information was before the
- crash.
-
- The BackInfo program will create a master system rescue diskette
- (BackInfo Diskette) with all the needed information to recover the
- hard disk after a crash.
-
- The RestInfo program will attempt to recover the system with the
- information recorded on the rescue diskette.
-
- The VirBoot program will check the hard disk partition table and
- boot record for any infection of viruses.
-
-
- Creating the master system rescue diskette
- ══════════════════════════════════════════
-
- To create the master system rescue diskette you must follow these
- steps:
-
- 1. Format a new system diskette in drive A: by typing "FORMAT A:
- /S" at the DOS prompt. If using DOS version 5.0 or higher, add
- /U to the FORMAT command line to perform an Unconditional format
- of the diskette. Do not use any Quick format utilities such as
- PC-Format from PC-Tools or Safe-Format from the Norton
- Utilities.
-
-
- BackInfo User Manual Page 2
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- 2. The BackInfo rescue diskette should be created from scratch each
- time you want to update it. No upgrades of the rescue diskette
- should be performed. This step is to ensure that each time the
- rescue diskette is created, it will be a newly formatted.
-
- 3. Make sure that your PATH statement is correctly set and points
- to the DOS directory where it can find important files such as
- SYS.COM and FDISK.COM.
-
- 4. Place both BackInfo and RestInfo in the same directory and run
- "BackInfo" from the DOS prompt.
- The program will then write all needed information to the rescue
- diskette.
-
- 5. Boot from your Rescue diskette to check if all information is
- recorded correctly. Do not let RestInfo run in its AutoPilot
- mode in this first run. If RestInfo reports any errors, do not
- use the rescue diskette and Contact the author to report this
- so it will be fixed in the next version.
-
- During the installation you will be prompted for to enter a
- unique machine code. This code will be written to the rescue
- diskette and will be used to verify that this rescue diskette
- will not be used on a different machine. Please make a note of
- what code you used for your machine.
-
- 6. Place a write protect tab on the rescue diskette and put it in a
- safe place.
-
-
- The BackInfo rescue diskette should be re-created every time you
- change your system configuration or after the following events:
-
- 1. Installation of a new hardware.
- 2. Low level format of the hard disk.
- 3. New DOS version installation.
- 4. Changes in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS.
- 5. Change in system paths.
- 6. Upgrades or updates of device drivers.
- 7. Any other case of changing the boot process.

- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
- The information on the BackInfo rescue diskette contains the
- following information:
-
- 1. CMOS information (AT only).
- 2. Master boot record of first hard disk.
- 3. Track 0 of the hard disk.
- 4. Boot record.
- 5. Chain of partitions and boot sectors in all installed drives.
- 6. System files and command processor.
- 7. Startup files (AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS).
- 8. Device drivers listed in the config.sys file.
- 9. System configuration text file.
- 10. RestInfo program.
- 11. A new AUTOEXEC.BAT file to run RestInfo.
- 12. Log of BackInfo activities while creating the rescue diskette.
-
- This information may be manually restored, but only by a trained
- person. However, the RestInfo program should restore all this
- information correctly.
-
-
- Restoring information after a system crash
- ══════════════════════════════════════════
-
- In case of a system crash or a hard disk boot failure, you should
- take the master rescue diskette from its safe place and follow
- these steps:
-
- 1. Make sure that your PC can boot from drive A. If it's an AT
- computer, make sure that the CMOS configuration is correct for
- drive A.
-
- 2. Place the master rescue diskette in drive A: and boot your PC.
- The RestInfo program will automatically start in the AUTOPILOT
- mode. You'll be asked if you want to continue in this mode. If
- you don't know nothing about recovering a crashed hard disk,
- just let RestInfo do its work and answer all questions with 'Y'.
- Before starting to recover data to the disk, RestInfo will
- prompt for the unique machine code that you entered during the
- creation of the rescue diskette.
-
- RestInfo will recover the system step-by-step and will boot the
- system after each step of recovering data.
-
- RestInfo will always prompt for Y/N if a disk write operation is
- about to occur. It will never do anything without notfying you
- first.
-
- After RestInfo will complete its operation, it is most likely that
- your hard disk is back to its normal state.

-
- FAT Problems
- ════════════
-
- Before RestInfo does any logical writes to the drive, it will check
- the FAT's to see that there are no critical errors in them.
- RestInfo will not fix the FAT problems. This must be done using
- DOS's CHKDSK command which BackInfo copied to the rescue diskette
- during its creation.
-
- RestInfo will check two things in the FAT. The first is that the
- media desecriptor byte matches the disk and the second is a
- physical compare of the two FAT copies to see they are identical.
- In the first check, if the media descriptor byte is invalid,
- RestInfo will fix this problem using the data from the Boot sector.
-
- If a mismatch is found during FAT's compare, you'll have to fix it
- manually.
-
- Fixing FAT problems
- ═══════════════════
-
- At the point where RestInfo finds a mismatch in the FAT's, it will
- stop and redirect you to this section of the document.
-
- Use any disk editor program to backup both FAT's to a diskette
- before doing anything else.
-
- Now you must do a little job. First, run CHKDSK C: from the rescue
- diskette to determine the type of problem. CHKDSK may display
- several errors, each of which must be handled differently.
-
- If no errors are reported, use the disk editor to switch FAT1 with
- FAT2 and repeat the CHKDSK C: command.
-
- If the results differ then you can be sure that FAT1 is correct and
- FAT2 is not. Use the disk editor to update the disk FAT's with FAT1
- and run CHKDSK C: to see that all errors are gone.
-
- If both FAT's report the same errors you need to fix these problems
- yourself.
-
- If LOST CHAINS are found, you must run CHKDSK C:/F to convert these
- chains to files and to check these files to see what data is
- recorded in them.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- BackInfo User Manual Page 5
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
-
- If CROSS LINKED files are found, you must do an extra job. Write
- down all names of files that are cross linked and later copy them
- do diskettes. After copying ALL of these files, run CHKDSK C:/F to
- correct the error. Now restore all the files to the disk and check
- each and every one of them because one of each pair of files is
- damaged.
-
- If both errors reported you must copy the cross linked files before
- running CHKDSK.
-
- Other errors are rare and you need to consult a professional person
- about how to fix these problems.
-
-
- After RestInfo
- ══════════════
-
- After RestInfo completed its operation and restored the hard disk
- data, it is your responsibility to check the system to validate it.
- Compare the information in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to the
- one recorded on your BackInfo rescue diskette.
- Check important device drives like DMDRVR.BIN and copy them from
- the BackInfo rescue diskette, if necessary.
-
-
- When NOT to use RestInfo?
- ═════════════════════════
-
- The Rescue diskette should be used only if your PC does not boot
- from the hard disk as it did before, or in case of a CMOS battery
- failure. In any case of errors such as these reported by CHKDSK or
- other disk checkup utilities, you should not use the Rescue
- diskette. Consult a professional trained person as of what to do.
-
-
- Warnings and Notes
- ══════════════════
-
- ■ The BackInfo system rescue diskette should only be used on the
- system it was created on. Never use a BackInfo rescue diskette on
- other systems.
-
- ■ If problems occurred during the creation of the BackInfo rescue
- diskette you should never try to restore from it.
-
- ■ If BackInfo reports files that were not copied to the rescue
- diskette do it manually. If there is not enough free space in the
- rescue diskette, copy them to a second diskette and keep it with
- the BackInfo rescue diskette.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- BackInfo User Manual Page 6
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
-
-
- ■ RestInfo is able to successfully restore a disk in almost any
- case. However, Cases that are not restored by RestInfo may be
- manually recovered by the information in the master rescue
- diskette. On the rare occasions that RestInfo may not safely
- restore the information to the hard disk, it is up to you to
- decide if to use RestInfo to recover the hard disk or to turn to
- a trained data recovery service.
-
- ■ BackInfo Package Programs are NOT compatible with the following:
-
- 1. Disk Doublers such as DoubleDisk<tm> and Stacker<tm>.
- 2. NEC 9800 series PCs.
- 3. DOS version prior to 3.0.
-
-
- The VirBoot Program
- ═══════════════════
-
- The VirBoot program is a boot time module of Backinfo. It is
- designed to run in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and to detect any partition or
- boot sector viruses that may infect your drive.
- By default, VirBoot checks both partition and boot sector of your
- C: drive. However, you may specify a drive letter on the command
- line and VirBoot will check its boot record. In any case, the
- partition table of your first drive will be checked.
- For example, running VIRBOOT with no parameters will check the
- partition table of your first hard drive and the boot sector of
- drive C:. Running VIRBOOT A: will check the partition table of your
- first hard drive and the boot sector of the diskette in drive A:.
-
- In case nothing wrong is detected by VirBoot, it will return with
- an errorlevel of 0. If VirBoot did find something in its check, it
- will exit with errorlevel 1.
-
- VirBoot is able to detect a total of 65 partition and boot viruses
- along with their variants.
