- What is Shareware?
-
- Shareware is a means of distributing software where you, the customer,
- get to use a fully-functional version of a program on a trial basis to
- make sure it meets your needs BEFORE you pay for it.
-
- Only then, AFTER you've decided to continue using the program, do you
- plunk down your money. For your trouble, you receive a typeset
- manual, a "registered" version of the program without "registration
- reminder" screens, and sometimes auxiliary utilities and other
- goodies. As a registered user of the program, you are also notified
- of significant upgrades and are entitled to special upgrade discounts.
-
- If, on the other hand, you decide the program doesn't meet your needs,
- you just toss it away. No muss, no fuss, no refund hassles.
-
- Shareware is typically distributed on bulletin board systems (BBS's)
- and other online services (such as CompuServe and Genie), through
- catalog vendors (like PsL and PBS), and even by friends and colleagues
- sharing their latest "finds". Though it is sometimes confused with
- "public domain", demo, or other free programs distributed through the
- same channels, shareware is not free. It is simply software which you
- are allowed to try out before paying for it.
-
- Shareware's "try-before-you-buy" nature can sometimes cause confusion
- over what constitutes payment for a program. It is important to note
- that the fee you pay to a catalog vendor (or the charges you incur
- while downloading the program from an online service) is a distribu-
- tion fee only, and is NOT payment for the program. You have paid for
- the program only after you have purchased it from the program author.
-
- Of course, you could continue using the software past its trial period
- without paying for it, but that would hurt both of us. The shareware
- system and the continued availability of quality shareware products
- depend on your willingness to pay for the shareware you use. By pay-
- ing for your shareware, you allow us, the program authors, to continue
- to support and develop our products, and that keeps both of us happy.
-
- Please show your support for shareware by paying for those programs
- you actually use and by passing them on to others.
-
- Shareware is kept alive by YOUR support!
