  2.     Welcome to this preview of SpaceKids.  A lot of fun for your
  3.     kids... and you will get a kick out of it too!
  4.

  7.     SpaceKids is the story of a brother and sister who live on the
  8.     Moon with their grandfather, a famous space explorer. One day 
  9.     Grandpa leaves to explore Earth. When he does not come back, 
  10.     the SpaceKids fly to Earth to search for him. Along the way, 
  11.     they discover a strange and wonderful world filled with fantastic 
  12.     characters.
  13.  
  14.     SpaceKids is an interactive cartoon where you help the kids find
  15.     their grandfather.  The story changes depending on your actions and
  16.     decisions.  Every time that you play, you will see something new.
  17.

  20.     System requirements:

  22.         500K available RAM
  23.         VGA display
  24.         Fast 386 or better.
  25.         SoundBlaster, Pro Audio or compatible sound card.
  26.         4 Meg. free space on your hard disk.

  30.     Note: Be sure to keep DEMO.EXE to give to your friends.
  31.  
  32.     Before you can use this preview you must first install it. 
  33.     Chances are, you have already done that if you are reading this.
  34.     If you already have, skip ahead to setting up your sound card.
  35.  
  36.         1. Make a directory/folder called skdemo.
  37.         2. Copy demo.exe to the skdemo directory/folder.
  38.         3. In DOS, go to your skdemo directory and type "demo" 
  39.            (no quotes) <ENTER> or from windows, double click demo.exe. 
  40.            This creates all the files that you need to use this demo.
  41.  
  42.     The next thing to do is to set up your sound card.
  43.  
  44.             1. In DOS, type install or in windows, double click 
  45.                install.exe.
  46.             2. Click the "Configuration" button.
  47.             3. Select the sound card that is closest to yours.
  48.             4. Click the "Configure Card" and select the address 
  49.                for your soundcard. Note: If you are not sure what
  50.            you should set it to, try 220.
  51.             5. Click OK.
  52.             6. Click OK to "Save Configuration".
  53.             7. Click to "Exit Install"
  54.             8. Click "Exit to DOS".

  56.     How to Play
  57.  
  58.         DOS:
  59.  
  60.             From  the DOS Prompt, go to the SpaceKids demo directory.
  61.             Type: skdemo  (if that is what you named it)
  62.  
  63.         Windows 3.1:
  64.  
  65.             There are two ways to play SpaceKids from Windows, a good
  66.             way and a better way.
  67.  
  68.             The "good way" is to just launch it from the File Manager. The
  69.             "better way" is to make your own SpaceKids Group and Icon.
  70.             There are a lot of steps to make your own Group and Icon but
  71.             it actually is quite easy and only takes a minute or two.
  72.  
  73.             To play using the File Manager:
  74.  
  75.                 1. Double click the File Manager to open it.
  76.                 2. Find the skdemo.exe file in the skdemo directory.
  77.                 3. Double-click skdemo.exe.
  78.  
  79.             To make your own SpaceKids Group and Icon:
  80.  
  81.                 First, make a Group:
  82.  
  83.                  1. From Program Manager menu, select FILE-NEW.
  84.                     (The NEW PROGRAM OBJECT Window opens.)
  85.                  2. Click the PROGRAM GROUP button.
  86.                  3. Click the OK button.
  87.                  4. Next to Description, type in  skdemo.
  88.                     (Leave Group File blank.)
  89.                  5. Click OK. You now have an empty Window for SpaceKids.
  90.  
  91.                 Then, make an Icon:
  92.  
  93.                  6. From Program Manager menu, select FILE-NEW.
  94.                    (The NEW PROGRAM OBJECT Window opens.)
  95.                  7. Click the PROGRAM ITEM button.
  96.                  8. Click the OK button.
  97.                     (The PROGRAM ITEMS PROPERTY Window opens.)
  98.                  9. Next to Description, type in Kids.
  99.                 10. To fill in the Command Line, click the BROWSE
  100.                     button.
  101.                     1. Go to the SKDEMO directory.
  102.                     2. Find the file skdemo.exe and double click it.
  103.                        (The Command Line will show the path and file.)
  104.                 11. Click the CHANGE ICON button. The message says there
  105.                     are no icons available among other things. Don't
  106.                     panic, everything is fine, just click the OK button.
  107.                     (The Change Icon Window opens.)
  108.                 12. Click the BROWSE button.
  109.                 13. Find the SKDEMO directory again.
  110.                 14. Find the file kids.ico and double click it.
  111.                     (You return to the Program Item Properties Window.)
  112.                 15. Click OK. You are done!

  114.             To play using the Icon:
  115.  
  116.                 1. Double click the KIDS Icon.
  117.  
  118.        Windows 95:
  119.  
  120.             There are several ways to play SpaceKids from Windows 95.
  121.             the best way is to make a shortcut to click on.
  122.             The next best way is to play it in a DOS Window. If that
  123.             won't work, you can restart in DOS and play it from there.
  124.  
  125.             Making a shortcut for the Desktop, Start Menu or Programs:
  126.  
  127.                 1.  Click on the Start Button.
  128.                 2.  Select Settings and then Taskbar
  129.                 3.  Click the Start Menu Programs Tab.
  130.                 4.  Click Add and then Browse.
  131.                 5.  Double click on the SKDEMO folder.
  132.                 6.  Right click skdemo.exe and select "Create Shortcut".
  133.                 7.  Find the new icon called "Shortcut to SKDEMO.EXE".
  134.                     It should already be selected (highlighted), if not,
  135.                     click its icon.
  136.                 8.  Click Open.
  137.                 9.  Click Next.
  138.                 10. To put the shortcut on the Desktop, Startup Menu or
  139.                     under Programs, double click the corresponding
  140.                     term. ex. to put the shortcut on the desktop, double
  141.                     click Desktop.
  142.                 11. Select a Name. Type in SPACEKIDS DEMO.
  143.         12. Select an icon: click the SPACEKIDS icon.
  144.         13. If, when you are done, you don't have the SpaceKids icon:
  145.             1. Right click the shortcut for SpaceKids demo.
  146.             2. Select Properties.
  147.             3. Select Program.
  148.             4. Click the Change Icon button.
  149.             5. Select browse.
  150.             6. Go to the skdemo folder and double click the kids icon.
  151.                 14. Double click the SpaceKids shortcut icon to play.

  153.      Playing SpaceKids from a DOS Window:
  154.  
  155.                 1. Open a DOS window.
  156.                  2. Click the START Button in the bottom left corner of
  157.                           the Widows Task Bar.
  158.              3. Select Programs.
  159.              4. Click on the MS-DOS Prompt Icon.
  160.          2. At the DOS Prompt, type:  cd \skdemo    
  161.         3. type: skdemo
  162.  
  163.         Playing SpaceKids from DOS:
  164.  
  165.             If either of the above procedures don't work, try the following:
  166.  
  167.                 1. Click on the START Button in the bottom left corner
  168.                    of the Windows Task bar.
  169.                 2. Select Shut Down and select "Restart in MS-DOS mode".
  170.                 3. At the DOS Prompt, type:  cd \skdemo
  171.                 4. Type: skdemo
  172.

  174.     HOW TO PLAY:
  175.  
  176.     This preview is fully playable. When there are arrows
  177.     on the screen, you can use them to make things
  178.     happen.
  179.  
  180.     Keyboard:  Press the key on the keypad that matches
  181.                the arrow. For example, to use the up arrow,
  182.                press the 8 key on your keypad. To use the
  183.                down-and-right arrow, press the 3 key on your
  184.                keypad, and so on.
  185.  
  186.     Mouse:     Move the mouse until the arrow you want to
  187.                use is bigger than the rest and then click
  188.                the mouse button.
  189.  
  190.     Joystick:  Move the joystick in the direction of the
  191.                arrow that you want to use.  If the joystick
  192.                doesn't seem to be working right, center the
  193.                joystick and press "J".
  194.  
  195.     The small picture by the arrows shows what the arrows will
  196.     control. If you see a "?" by the arrows, it means that you
  197.     need to solve a special challenge before moving on.
  198.  
  199.     Press "S" to skip a scene.
  200.  
  201.     Hold "F" down to fast forward at double speed.
  202.  
  203.     Press the spacebar to pause the game. Press any key to
  204.     continue.
  205.  
  206.     Press the Esc key twice to quit.
