02/08/93 - ToneLoc version 0.98 (beta-10)
Welcome to the new version of ToneLoc! With mucho help from Mucho
Maas, we have completely re-written ToneLoc. Again. There are also
several new utilties to supplement ToneLoc. There are probably still a
few bugs that we didn't catch, so expect another release soon. Have fun
with it. The new utilities that are included are: ToneMap, TLog,
TConvert, TLSumm, and TLReport. We URGE you to check out ToneMap (see
below).
-=[ Improvements ]=-
-- NEW WITH 0.98:
■ NON-FOSSIL Support! You don't need a FOSSIL driver like BNU or X00
anymore. ToneLoc has built-in serial routines (better than 0.97).
The FOSSIL option is still available though, in case the built-in
routines don't work for you. If you have problems with the built-in
routines, please contact us, and we will try to make it work for you.
■ New command line argument: "/#:xxxx" tells toneloc to stop scanning
after dialing xxxx numbers. /#:1000 would stop after 1000 numbers.
■ New command line argument: "/L:logname" tells toneloc to log to
[logname]. You can specify /L:nul to log to nul (nothing), or
/L:555.LOG to log to 555.LOG, for example.
■ There is a "Help" alternate screen, HELP.BIN. It tells what keys
you can hit while scanning and what they do.
■ Support! There is now NO reason for you ToneLoc users not to
contact us with bugs, suggestions, or comments. You can contact
us the following ways:
1. Our Internet account: tone@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu
E-mail us here. If you have a bug report, please include
important information about your system like: DOS version,
system type, your toneloc config file, and MODEM type.
2. CelerityNet private e-mail/netmail, or on any BBSs that we
call.
3. VMB: We don't have one yet! If you can offer us a good
reliable, 1-800, 24-hour VMB, we would appreciate it!
Thanks.
■ In ToneMap you can type Control-RightArrow to put the cursor
on the NEXT carrier/tone, or Control-LeftArrow for the previous
carrier/tone.
■ Configurable modem response strings. If your modem sends non-
standard responses, like "CARRIER 2400", you can set these
accordingly. Configurable responses include: CONNECT, TONE
FAX, RINGING, BUSY, VOICE, NO DIALTONE, & NO CARRIER
■ New .DAT datafile structure. BACKUP YOUR DATAFILES, then
run "TCONVERT *" to convert your datafiles to the new version.
■ Automatically detects 43 and 50 line mode, and adjusts window
sizes accordingly.
■ New feature: /D: - Delete range. You can make toneloc
not dial a range of numbers, like, /D:1000-1999 would
NOT dial 1000-1999.
■ Fixed bugs with /X Exclude mask, range, ExRange, etc. It
_should_ work fine now, but watch for fuckups.
■ Pressing 'Q' while scanning will exit AFTER current dial attempt.
■ The blacklist used to be limited to 100 entries, now it is limited
to 1000. And it is dynamic, so it saves memory!
■ We cleaned up and optimized the code a lot, but you don't care do you?
■ Detects and enables the 16550A UART's buffer, unless you have an OLD
16550, where it will disable the FIFO's so it works reliably. Also
works with intel 82510 UARTs.
■ Fixed tons of bugs with /S:starttime, /E:endtime, and /H:hours to
dial.
■ "Sanity Checking" ToneLoc checks before each modem command to make
sure the modem is still alive. If you turn off the modem, unplug the
serial cable, or the modem just dies, the CTS signal will drop and
ToneLoc will ask you to fix the problem. If this causes a problem
for you, you can disable the feature.
-- NEW WITH 0.97:
■ ToneLoc 0.97 was an abortion that should have never been released.
Please ignore it totally.
-- NEW WITH 0.96:
■ Alternate Screen! Press "B" to blank screen or display alt. screen.
NOTE: This required me to write our own text scrolling routine,
because we couldn't use INT 10 AH=6 to scroll the screen.
please look for bugs related to text scrolling in the windows.
■ Reports dials per hour, AND Estimated Time until Completion!
■ K-Cuzt0m note option! Press "K" to enter a custom note for a number
■ Improved dials per hour calculations - more accurate
■ Include or exclude ranges of numbers
■ Automatically logs onto COSMOS after scan and checks all
found carriers/tones.
■ Just kidding
-- NEW WITH 0.95:
■ Last number dialed before an exit isn't lost
■ Improved customization of modem dialing strings and timing
■ Negative masking - lets you exclude ranges of numbers
■ Configurable colors
■ Now works COM1-COM4! I promise!
■ Modem speaker toggle on/off WHILE dialing = 'S'
■ Manual redial = 'R'
■ Time eXtend = 'X' - adds 5 seconds
■ Extensive command line timing options
■ DESQview aware windowing routines
■ Releases timeslices while in DESQview (uses about 5% of CPU time)
■ All modem communications routines are in assembly (= fast)
■ ToneLoc can now SCAN FOR CARRIERS! THOSE DAMN RACOONS!
■ Reports Dials per Hour
■ Ability to abort dials after X number of rings
■ Supports baud rates of 300-57600
■ An even fancier meter!
■ Monochrome-aware screen attributes
■ Much improved .DOC file
■ Automatic timed backup of .DAT file
■ Separate file for "found" tones and/or carriers
■ Blacklist file (list of numbers ToneLoc should never dial)
■ Sounds (configurable)
■ Volume control WHILE dialing
■ ToneMap: Visually displays datafiles (VGA required, see below)
■ Now scans Random or Sequential (forward or backward)
■ You may 'pause' while dialing (for whatever reason)
■ Option to exit if too many "NO DIALTONES" occur
■ Several "note" keys: <C>arrier, <F>ax, <G>irl, <T>one, <V>MB
and <Y>elling asshole -- to make a special note while dialing
■ nuttin honey (yet)
And various other minor things and bug fixes.
-=[ About ToneMap ]=-
The best way to learn about the allocation of numbers in a given
prefix is to call each number individually, listen to the result, and
keep careful notes. Since this is impossible for most of us, Toneloc
has been designed to keep track of it for you. This version of ToneLoc
keeps a very detailed data file. It records the response of each
number, whether it was a tone, carrier, voice, timeout, etc, and how
many times it rang. This information is stored in a 10k .DAT file,
which ToneMap can read and display for you as graphic map of the numbers
you have scanned.
When shown this way, patterns become evident which might otherwise
remain obscure. PBX DID (Direct Inward Dial) groups, bands of busy
numbers, ranges of beeper numbers, and more should all show up clearly
defined in your maps if they are present. ToneMap requires a color VGA
display, it uses MCGA (320x200x256). We have included a few sample data
files so you can see some patterns you might come across. For a more
detailed discussion of ToneMap, please read the TL-USER.DOC User manual.
A lot can be done with the datafiles it creates, so SAVE THOSE .DAT
files from now on!
