  15. Phreaking: The use of a telephone
  16. company to evade the toll charges
  17. involved with a long distance call.

  19.        My strongest opinion about
  20. phreaking is that it has been going on
  21. for FAR too long.  The companys that we
  22. are dealing with are simply not going
  23. to tolerate it much longer. But I have
  24. had this view for about four years now,
  25. and things have remained the same-
  26. Hardly anyone gets busted...
  27.        This article will deal with
  28. factual information about phreaking in
  29. 1987.  I have conducted experiments
  30. involving the supposed 'trace detect'
  31. numbers, and I have spoke with a public
  32. relations manager at Sprint. For a
  33. different point a view, I contacted a
  34. lawyer that was familiar with phreaking
  35. as it pertains to us; The Phreaks.

  37.  
  38. Part I: The Rumors
  39.  
  40. I have heard two very different and
  41. distinct rumors about phreaking. By
  42. this I mean that it seems there are two
  43. different point of views when it comes
  44. to tracing and phreaking. One states
  45. that there is simply no way to trace,
  46. and that even if you were traced the
  47. evidence could not be used against you.
  48. The other one is that you can be
  49. traced, and it is just a matter of luck
  50. that you havent been busted yet. This
  51. is the space age. I assure you that
  52. tracing IS possible.  If you have any
  53. doubt, just call up the CIA or FBI #
  54. listed in one of the many 'hacker phone
  55. list' g-files and harrass whoever
  56. answers a few times with death threats.
  57. I like to assume that I am being traced
  58. every time I call out.  By doing this I
  59. am more aware of the number of calls I
  60. make and how long I stay on. If I was
  61. to be busted, maybe the bill would not
  62. be as high... The next question that
  63. arises is ' But do all companys
  64. trace?', and 'Are there any SAFE
  65. companys left?'
  66.  
  67. Part II: My Expirement!
  68.  
  69. I am sure that all of you have seen, at
  70. one time or another, a number posted on
  71. a BBs that supposedly checks to see if
  72. your code is being traced. Up until
  73. recently, I was sure that these numbers
  74. were for telephone repairmen to check
  75. your lines for clarity and frequency
  76. range.  But recently I ran across one
  77. (it still has the oscillating tone)
  78. that acts differenty depending on how I
  79. called it.
  80. [ The Results ] 2mins for each test

  84. 1st Company: AT&T (direct call)
  85. R: The tone was clear and sharp, with
  86.    no interruptions at all. 
  87.  
  88. 2nd Company: Sprint [950-0777]
  89. R: Erratic clicks and snaps while the
  90.    oscillating tone went up & down.
  91.  
  92. 3rd Company: Sprint [800-332-0777]
  93. R: Clear for one cycle (up-down),
  94.    then an abrupt disconnect.
  95.  
  96. 4th Company: (?) 800-638-1996
  97. R: Much like that of AT&T's results,
  98.    but the line quality was noticebly
  99.    poorer.
  100.  
  101. My analysis:
  102.  
  103. It is obvious that AT&T would not have
  104. to enable a trace, as the AT&T Cosmos
  105. keeps track of all your outgoing calls
  106. for you.  So if there was a way to
  107. detect a trace, it would register
  108. negative when tested through AT&T.
  109.  
  110. Sprint is a huge company, they have the
  111. money to effectivly use tracing. The
  112. clicks I heard using 950-0777 might
  113. reflect this.  But then 950's are
  114. rumored to use ANI anyway. The 800
  115. Sprint disconnected me, which AT&T
  116. didnt, so I have a feeling that it was
  117. tracing.
  118.  
  119. 800-638-1996, which is most likely a
  120. small company with no tracing
  121. equipment, gave me a steady tone. By
  122. the way, 1996 uses 6 digit codes.
  123.  
  124. Assuming that 817-460-1895 is a trace
  125. detect, I would have to say that Sprint
  126. is indeed dangerous in that they trace.
  127. 800-638-1996 seems to be the safe
  128. route.
  129.  
  130. Now, what if that oscillating tone
  131. included a 2600mz at the higher end?
  132. Telephone company equipment of Sprint
  133. might pick that up as a disconnect.
  134. That would account for the clicks and
  135. snaps, as they were similar to the
  136. sound of a trunk about to be seized.
  137.  
  138. I myself will be staying away from
  139. Sprint, and using 800-638-1996 from now on.
  140. Poorer lines, but possibly safer.
  141.  
  142. Part III: My discussions with Sprint
  143.  
  144. On the phone I acted like a potential
  145. customer looking for the right LD
  146. company.  I claimed that I had
  147. discontinued MCI becuase someone got a
  148. hold of my code and abused it.  I was
  149. not charged with the calls, but it had
  150. scared me away from MCI. I asked her if
  151. this might happen on Sprint. She said
  152. that it was always possible, but not
  153. likely (that was just bullshit). I then
  154. told her that I did not think MCI even
  155. knew who abused my account, and asked
  156. her if they could find out who was
  157. illegally using codes on Sprint. She
  158. said yes, and that they had special
  159. investigative procedure to do so.
  160. [ Note:  I believe that these
  161. procedures consist of calling every
  162. number dialed by the phreak in hopes of
  163. getting a voice #, and finding out just
  164. who called the person. When I ran LSD
  165. BBs, Sprint used to call me all the
  166. time wanting to know who had called
  167. me...]
  168.  
  169. Part IV: The Next Step
  170.  
  171.    If Sprint/Mci/Metro are not tracing
  172. right now, I'm sure that they will some
  173. day soon.  But all is not lost, there
  174. will always be a way to phreak. 
  175. Nothing is perfect, and when there are
  176. imperfections in the phone company,
  177. phreaks will find a way to abuse them. 
  178. Right now there are several new
  179. companys (look in the Rolling Stones
  180. classifieds) that offer unlimited long
  181. distance calls for a flat rate of $100
  182. a month (no, not PC Pursuit- which is a
  183. decent alternative to phreaking).  If
  184. someone could get a hold of a code on
  185. one of these systems, you could phreak
  186. all you want without fear of being
  187. busted.  These companys simply want to
  188. get that flat $100, and thats all. But
  189. I would imagine the line quality is
  190. horrible. I dont have a # for one of
  191. these services, but when I get one I
  192. will post it on the boards mentioned
  193. above.

  195. Part V: Calls in excess
  196.  
  197. There are businesses out there that
  198. rely on long distance calls to bring in
  199. the bucks.  They might place 30,000
  200. calls in one week.  If they phreak,
  201. they have cut out 80% of expenses.
  202. Compared to those agencies, we are very
  203. small time... I doubt I have ever put
  204. more then $2,000 on one code. Those
  205. companys could put $50,000 on one
  206. before the code is even cancelled. I
  207. would imagine Sprint and the others are
  208. worried with the big-time phreaks, and
  209. not so much us. Besides, it seems that
  210. when a small-time-phreak is busted,
  211. three or four others go down with him. 
  212. They are probably using them to set an
  213. example. I would try to cut down on the
  214. amount of calls you make;  Narrow the
  215. number of boards you call to just the
  216. important ones...  It is dangerous to
  217. think of phreaking as something to do
  218. when you are bored...

  221. Part VI: Conclusion
  222.  
  223. Phreaking in '87 is more dangerous than
  224. it was in '86.  The same goes with any
  225. crime that you commit. I talked with a
  226. lawyer, and he said that when you are
  227. caught phreaking you simply have no
  228. rights. They know you did it, and they
  229. can prove it. The tedious part is
  230. figuring up how much you owe them- and
  231. they frequently make you pay for the
  232. time spent figuring your bill. My
  233. advice to those that are busted is to
  234. NEVER admit they you did it until you
  235. see positive proof. If they do have the
  236. 'goods' on you, slap a sad story on
  237. them and see about sending them a small
  238. payment every month.. (until you get
  239. back on your feet and can pay it all
  240. off at once, is a good line)
  241. You do not want to be dragged into
  242. court, or sued.

  245. anymore information I will post it on
  246. the three boards listed above, or if
  247. enough comes my way I'll write another
  248. article.

  259. This is the second release of this
  260. article.  The first release brought a
  261. lot of critisism my way about the
  262. experiment I did.  PLEASE realize that
  263. it was just an EXPERIMENT, and I really
  264. have no idea if Sprint traces or not. I
  265. just think that they do.
